Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

As we have more contributions and are trying to shorten the learning curve here there is a Manual for Calibrators (Version 0.x).

Comments and contributions are very welcome!

I'm trying to get the link for the document, but as cuiserforum just admits <1MB of pdf attachments the file was scrapped

Working on that

I'm sure if you FTP it to the upload directory, someone will put it on the site for you.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

processed: 722 charts
accepted: 686 charts, mean ratio 1.00482 stddev 0.00185

problem: chart 26125 ratio 0.92272 - 2' error in SW corner lng
problem: chart 26224 ratio 0.00020 - 1d error in SW corner lng
problem: chart 27211 ratio 0.67606 - 10' error in SW corner lat
problem: chart 97412 ratio 1.10891 - 1' error in SW corner lat

no projection: 62595

-----
Someone has locked 62595, so I expect it to be fixed soon.

Here is a histogram of the accepted values of ratio:

0.997 - 1 - I
0.999 - 2 - II
1.000 - 9 - IIIIIIIII
1.001 - 28 - XXIIIIIIII
1.002 - 54 - XXXXXIIII
1.003 - 60 - XXXXXX
1.004 - 114 - CXIIII
1.005 - 100 - C
1.006 - 203 - CCIII
1.007 - 98 - XXXXXXXXXIIIIIIII
1.008 - 13 - XIII
1.009 - 4 - IIII

I tried entering a chart with an error in the seconds for one corner. A 10" error was not detected, but 20" error was detected.

A good start. A few comments:

1.
"Select the Projection - that will be Mercator in almost all cases."

That is far from true. There is a fair sprinkling of Transverse Mercator and, importantly, quite a few with no projection stated, and it is crucial that calibrators do not feel these "should" be Mercator.

2.
For the datum correction, the example you give under "As shown below" is a confusing one, because adding to latitude and subtracting from longitude only equate to Northward and Eastward in the N hemisphere and W of the Greenwich meridian. In other words, if I have a chart in the Tasman Sea that says add x to latitude and subtract y from longitude, this doesn't mean adjust x Northward and y Eastward.

3.
"before committing the data by "Save & Exit" please check that all the LEDs are green
If not, no chart will be generated."

This is not quite precise. Grey LEDs are also permitted in some circumstances (Under "General chart and header data" and, of course, Comments).
More accurate to say that if any LEDs are red, no chart will be generated.

4.
"With "quilting off", check if the gridlines of OpenCPN are aligned with the Lat/Lon grid of the KAP."
I think OpenCPN's grid is off by default, so might be friendly to tell users how to turn it on (ToolBox, Show Grid)

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Some strange (to me) choices have been made for setting "Chart type".

26128 Kingston Harbour doesn't seem "INTERNATIONAL".
29282 Scott Island, which is half a kilometre of ice in the vast Ross Sea, doesn't look "COASTAL".

It looks like this field is heading towards meaninglessness.

If it's being set just on the basis of scale, then we might as well let Pavel do the job properly and automatically for us.

bcn... good to have a manual!I'd add these as speed tips:

for NGA viewer, just click on the image to zoom in(in firefox, anyways)

for SW NE coords,
use the TAB key to move through the various fields..
ie: 30 TAB 49 TAB 00.6 TAB n TAB 130 TAB 35 TAB 16.0 TAB w
would fill out the fields as
30 49 00.6 N
130 35 16.0 W

Yes, and two TABS will take you to the beginning of the NE entries from the end of the SW entries.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Thomas, Pavel,

- the question of the hierarchy of chart types is still open.
If there is a 90 deg skewed chart which insets or corners out of range, how shall we categorize that chart: 90 deg skewed?

- rectangular charts with insets "on the water" are treated in non uniform way:
as "doable with insets" and as "special PLYs required"
Your idea?

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Nohal, Recri

would it make sense and is it feasible to run the check during the creation process for the kap directly - coming back with a warning if the check fails?

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I have joined together two NGA charts covering Gamboa-Balboa,calibrated and converted it to a .kap file. The chart displays perfectly in both Fugawi Marine ENC as well as Seaclear II, BUT NOT IN OCPN? The map is located in a PANAMA directory together with other charts of the area, including another NGA chart, all working.

This is the chart header:
