I tried to download from the NZ Gov. site but all I get is the miniature versions??

Anyway.. I am looking for 14900 - 14909 - and 14907
Do you have an overview chart covering the Southern Ocean NZ to McMurdo base?

Why not just download all NZ charts from the link that Marco has published many times? You can find the link in the opencpn.org wiki as well.
All the charts that you are looking for are there.
You can have a look at the tifs if you like here:charts.linz.govt.nz - /tifs/

I was trying to avoid downloading ALL of the NZ charts which is quite a BIG file with the quality of my Internet connection here.

Marco was willing to send me the 2-3 charts I needed.

I'm affraid none of the charts you uploaded works in either OpenCPN,SeaClear or Fugawi ENC Marine.. Something must have happened in the upload?

Tore, I downloaded from your folder the NZ14900.kap

It is identical to the one I uploaded.

It works perfectly in OpenCPN.

Moreover, if you need some specific NZ chart you can always use KapGen. Download KapGen, download latest CHARTCAL.DIR, run KapGen and type NZ14900 (or any other NZ chart) and you will get the chart downloaded and compiled.

I do'nt know what it can be,I tried 3 maps and none of them loaded in either OpenCPN,SeaClear or Fugawi ENC...

Finally manged to download 3 of the charts from the NZ Gov. website in .tiff format.
Altered them to .jpg's in 75 dpi for easier management. Later I will calibrate them manually.

My apologies.... The charts I tried were not the once you uploaded but some early charts I uploaded and converted at the beginning. YOUR maps loaded perfectly...

Hey Tore!

I wanted to thank you publicly for the charts you helped us with. They worked perfectly (if only my laptop had!). We are now in the Abacos.

I wish there were a step by step instruction manual for getting from one of those sketch charts in a cruising guide to having it up and running on OCPN. Maybe the two of us could collaborate on that, with me being the dunce beta tester and you playing Mr. Wizard? Really, I'm a good dunce!

There will be periods when we don't have internet for a week or so at a time but otherwise we should be connected most of the next few months here. Let me know what you think via email if you like.

Hi George..

Many years ago when I still was a young navigations officer on a Norwegian laker,we were taken to som delightful areas around Nassau by the ship's agent.
I remember jumping out in the shallow water to pull the boat up on the beach,landing on a nasty sea urchin which was rather painful.

Hobbling around on one foot,our host said 'let me see the sole of your foot'
As I raised it,he grabbed a hefty piece of wood and gave the painful area of black spine spots a good hard wallop. I said 'hey,what are you doing,that was very painful! He laughed and said that was the only way to pulverize/disintegrate the brittle embedded needles of the sea urchin. He was right,not long after I walked without pain. memories .. memories...

Well, the charts are a combination of graphic preparation work to straighten and clean up the original bitmap. When you are happy about its appearance,you can for example also add a pale blue/grey color to the sea areas so you later will be able to dim the chart for night sailing. Microsoft does not allow dimming of white colors.

Then I would suggest .jpg as the initial format of the bitmap. Reduce the resolution to 75 dpi which is the maximum a PC screen can display anyway and will reduce the size of the map. Then use a .jpg compressing software to reduce the file size further before using the FREE Gimp2 software to reduce the colors to 127 and finally store it as a .png file in the 'Chartconvert' directory.

Now use FREE 'ChartcalII' to load up the .png chart and enter all the geo locs you can find,generally in a box shape.. enter also all the chart details such as scale,soundings etc. not forgetting to enter (for example) 'GE9999' in the # box at the top right. Then enter the geo locs of all the map corners before saving the CHARTCAL.DIR header file to the 'Chartconvert' directory.

Now start Chartconvert and load up the previously stored .png file and the program will start the conversion process to a .kap file.

A bit of a proceedure but easy when you have converted a few charts.

I attach a screenshot of MY 'Chartconvert' directory so you can see which programs you will need for the conversion process.

I strongly recommend not using jpg for charts. This is based on how the format stores the data.
jpg is a lossy format. It throws away data during the compression. This is ok for images that change continuously like photographies but not for images with lines, or i.e charts with distinct areas of different color.
In this case it is much better with a bitmapped format such as png, gif, bmp... it keeps all the information in the image.
jpg will get more and more blurry for every transition.
