Of course there is no difficulty replacing the white areas of my .kap charts with a light blue colour using 'ChartConvert' which can convert in both directions. After that they become perfectly 'dimable' using 'DarkAdapted'.

Re my #830. Here is an altered chart where white has been replaced with a pale blue colour. Now it works perfectly with 'DarkAdapted'

Yet another sample of altering the white main channel to a pale blue with a good contrast to the other sounding lines. A bit of extra work but I will do them only prior to using in a real situation when I expect to do some night sailing.

Although this is a possible workaround I would not like to do this for all my commercial (not home scanned) kap files.

And I doubt it will be a solution for the majority of sailors...

I agree with you Jonas,it is purely an emergency measure. Hope somebody finds a more sensible solution. Just a screen dim function would be ok,like it is done in Sea Clear II.

I have some charts in geotiff-format. I want to convert them to BSB3 with the use of gdal_translate. I managed to download gdal and even make it running in VC2008 express :-).

When translating a chart I get the error message: 'BSB only supports WGS84 or NAD83 geographic projections.' gdal_translate does produce a kap-file, but it does not contain any georeferencing (AFA I can see with gdalinfo), so the chart does not show up in OpenCPN.

I have attached the data from gdalinfo from one of my original geotif-charts. I thought that I might need gdalwarp to re-project the chart to what is needed. From http://spatialreference.org/ref/epsg/4230/proj4js/, I thought that this might be the format of the 's_srs', and that the format of the 't_srs' might be '+WGS84' (found that somewhere else on cruisersforum). gdalwarp tells me 'ERROR 1: Translating source or target SRS failed'. So I must misunderstand the format of the SRS somehow?

As can be seen I'm not an expert :-) , neither in C(++) nor spatial reference systems, but I'm sure I'm on the right track somehow. Could somebody help me through to the actual gdalwarp-command line or tell me what I misunderstood? Thanks a lot :-)

Referring to BSB 4 PlugIn 'sailor54' #13

There are at least two other very useful ways converting GoogleEarth areas to .kap maps suitable for OpenCPN.

1. Using the Screengrab add-on in Firefox and 'Exploring Google Maps for FSX' you can select ANY size of land area and have it displayed in the scale of your choice. Using the Screengrab' facility you can easily save the bitmap file. 'Exploring Google Maps for FSX' also creates the four corner co-ordinates you can use in MapCal II to create the CHARTCAL calibration file required to generate the .kap file using 'ChartConvert'.

2. A more automatic way to generate a screen size display of a GoogleEarth map can be done using the 'GE2KAP' program.

The only problem is the missing soundings and other navigation marks.

I started reading this thread from the beginning, but sorta got bogged down in all the unix/windows compilation/compatibility issues. Is there somewhere I can look to get a clear picture of the current status and what still needs to be done?

I'm a c/c++ programmer, normally unix (solaris, aix, and my favorite, freebsd), but have to use windows to go online, so I might as well fire up cygwin and start playing with this stuff -- unfortunately I've got vista running right now, but that's my problem...

Otherwise: a dimming function for night chartwork which also dims white areas.

Making OpenCPN compatible with BSB ver.4 and S63 charts.

I just did a quick search and first found "Dark Adapter," but see that you guys already tried and rejected it. However, I did find a cool free program called "dimmer" that seems to work. Now, I don't warrant this, just downloaded and installed it, but it seems to work.
