Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

There is an agreement between the European countries to provide IENCs for the waters used for commercial traffic for free.

They see this as a kind of subvention for a branch where not very well funded family operations form an important part of the fleet.

And not that few of these commercial skippers are using OpenCPN.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

The Chartdldr Plugin is working quite nicely for the majority of charts that are available.

I realize that Pavel has been drawn away by other things that take precedence and do not want to put any pressures on him, but I am wondering if it is at a stage where it can be released (perhaps not) and if I can help in any way.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

I have been quietly testing it too. I find that it works for all the US charts. It has always correctly identified all the Notice to Mariner updates that NOAA pushes out every few days.

I have not reviewed the documentation. My vote would be to push it out so long as the documentation is up to date and accurate. A simple getting started guide would be nice too. I haven't had time to work on something like that and frankly I don't understand how the documentation help system works anyway. I am willing to learn though.

Rick...
It will be released when it is ready. It will be ready when https://github.com/nohal/chartdldr_p...ilestone%3A1.0 is empty.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Well that is pretty definitive. I can help with the documentation over the next days and make sure the screenshots still apply.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Transmitter Dan and others working on Chartdlder the Wiki is located here and can be edited by anyone I believe. https://github.com/rgleason/chartdldr_pi/wiki
You thoughts, experiences and knowledge are much appreciated.
Pavel has separated the Wiki into two topics

  1. New OpenCPN User. https://github.com/rgleason/chartdld...w-OpenCPN-user
  2. Existing OpenCPN User. https://github.com/rgleason/chartdld...g-OpenCPN-user

The New OpenCPN User section needs corrections and improvements and elaboration.

The Existing OpenCPN User needs better description and explanations about the structure of Charts, Chart Files, Chart Directories, Chart Groups, the OpenCPN.ini file, and how to effectively move and organize chart folders that have already been downloaded.

For Existing Users there are basically two choices:
  1. Keep your existing file structure and "Add Catalogs" "Custom" and use your existing paths OR
  2. When "Adding Catalog" use the "Predefined" paths and move your old folders into that structure.
Our task in the wiki is to help Existing users accomplish this.

We should be cognizant of the Wiki instructions for Options > Charts
http://opencpn.org/ocpn/installing_charts
Including the Chart Files tab where Folder paths are entered and Chart Groups tab where new Chart groups are added and Folder paths assigned.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

I have one major question about the "Add Catalog" "Predefined" -----> using C:\\ProgramData\\opencpn\\Charts

---By the way does does Linux and Ubuntu use?

Is this going to make it difficult for Windows users who don't have Admin access? If so, should we be explaining how to become admin and the pros and cons?

I have followed closely the developments chartdownloader. I remember the very first versions, time of 25 OpenCPN release.

What progress since that time. Congratulations to the developers.

In the tutorial French opencpn.shoreline.fr, a page has been created for this plugin. It is already online, but without advertising. Pending the final version of the plugin.

The page has been written without the help Pavel has created. If French speaking users happening here, their opinion on their assessment of the page will be welcome.

See here : T?l?chargement automatis? de cartes marines

If they have no access to \ProgramData\OpenCPN\Charts they can use \Users\username\Documents\Charts or some other folder where they have access. I believe in V1.0 the default folder will be something similar to the latter. Let me check with git and get back to you on that.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

It looks like we should check and confirm about the main "Predefined" path for each OS (winxp, win7, win8, Linux, Ubuntu, Mac) and adjust the wiki, accordingly.

Gille.. has prepared some detailed pages on use of Chartdownloader. It is quite comprehensive and is worth a look.
I hope this google translated link will work.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Does this mean that it is now out of alpha/beta and ready for use?

If so, I might download the various instructions and executeables and test it out this weekend.

Thx!

It is still in beta. There are a few known bugs and features that need to be added. You are welcome to test the beta version 0.7.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Rick,

I edited the wiki for new users. But I don't know how to upload images. If you give me a hint I can upload images of the latest dialog boxes.

I left some of your text down below my new text. Once I get current images I can merge some of your text into the instructions. So it's a bit messy at the moment but it will come together pretty quick once we have all the images ready.

Gille I guess you didn't understand that it translates french to english. I believe the translate link does work. I wanted others to see what you had done.
