Chart Downloader Tab Questions

Having used OpenCPN successfully for many years, was delighted to see a new feature "Chart Downloader" in version 4.8.6. I loaded the new version on both my desktop with Windows 7, and IMB Think Pad, Windows XP. The new Chart Downloader appeared on the Desktop, but not on the laptop, even after uninstalling OpenCPN and reloading it from scratch.


Anyone else had this issue and any suggestions for resolving it?

Have you enabled the chart downloader in Settings->Plugins?

Grib 4.1, Dashboard 1.2 and WMM 1.1 are all there and Enabled. There is no Chart Loader to do anything with.

Can you post a copy of your OpenCPN logfile?

OK , a little more looking into this problem.

Short answer:
OpenCPN Chart Downloader is no longer officially supported on XP due to upgrades in many chart source TLS (https) security policies. These new protocols are simply not available on XP. We all knew that this time was coming, and now it is here.

Possible workaround:
For some chart sources, it may be possible to use the chartdldr_pi.dll file from a previous release of OpenCPN, for example Version 4.8.4. Some sources have not yet updated their TLS configuration, and may still work with the older protocols.

If you would like to try this, simply get and install a copy of OCPN 4.8.4, and copy the older chartdldr_pi.dll file over the same file in your new 4.8.6 installation at directory "plugins".

Or stay with O4.8.4 on your XP machine, and use the chart sources that you find compatible.

I'm not surprised that an 11 year old laptop can't quite take advantage of the latest tools.


Hopefully having this thread available will let any other ancient mariners know it's not them, it's just the seaweed on the system.

Well, it's not the laptop that is the problem, It's windows.
Chart downloader and Opencpn runs perfectly on a Thikpad T42 from 2004 using Xumbuntu 16.04
