Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Not sure if this is the same as FS#1458
Should there be a “GetTime” button on the Sight Properties form?
Discussion: If I take a sight there are 2 cases.
1- I do not know what CB it is: Measure Hs, click “New”, enter Hs, figure out what CB it is, select it from the drop down box and hit OK.
2- I know the CB is Sirius: I click “New”, select Sirius from the drop down box, click “Find”. Set the “Altitude” on the sextant and I am ready to take the sight (CB will appear close to the horizon). Close the Sight Properties form (the time is no good), take the sight, click New, select Sirius from the drop down box, enter the Hs and click “OK”
If a sight does not look right can take a new Hs ,click “GetTime” enter Hs and click OK.
PS Your plugin is a great teaching aid for my 40 min crash course on celestial navigation. On OpenCpn can mark the CB location, measure the COP and show how it relates to Ho, change values to show what happens etc etc.

I'm also having the problem that Alan described - new installation of Windows 10, OpenCPN 4.4.0, Cel Nav PI 2.0 windows installer; I have the same issue with a Windows 7 installation.

The cel nav PI worked well for me with OpenCPN 4.0, & I'm currently helping set up a friend's boat for a big trip, so it'd be great to get it working again ... any ideas? Thanks, Nige.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

The problem is from upgrading wxwidgets from 4.0-4.2 broke the sight list on windows only.

I believe I fixed the problem a few months ago, but I don't think the plugin got released again. Could someone build from source on windows and confirm that multiple sights is working? If so I would make a new release.

Also, you said the plugin was working well.... Did you use it? So far as I know it's only been verified for sun and star sights, and I would love to hear from someone who has done moon or planet sights as I do not have a sextant.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Sean - I built the plugin from your source code in W10 & it's working for multiple sights - thanks for the steer :-)

Screenshot attached - "sights" from Stellarium - Capella looks a little out - not sure why yet ...

I used the plugin last year with a sextant with a bubble sight from my home when I was teaching myself cel nav - mostly sun sights & a few moon. I intend to use it at sea this summer - I'll let you know how I get on ...

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Further to my last post, I found a consistent discrepancy of ~12nm in starsights on an E-W axis (not N-S). I compared this with results from another celestial nav package (Teacup), which indicated that the issue was with the OpenCPN PI.

There appears to be a difference of ~20' between SHAs reported (Capella 2017-02-13 21:34:07 - OpenCPN PI: 280 49.7'; Teacup: 280 30.55'; PyAlmanac: 280 30.6'). GHA Ares appears consistent between all packages. Could this account for the discrepancy I'm seeing?

I'm getting to the limit of my knowledge here, so if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful to hear.

Possibly a time error or an almanac error.

And the figures of the US Naval Observatory are:
GHA Aries SHA Capella GHA Capella Dec Capella
107° 38.0' [280° 30.6'] 28° 08.6' 46° 00.8'
Celestial Navigation Data for Assumed Position and Time

So it seems there is an error in the almanac or the calculations of the Celestial plugin (assuming that the time mentioned for your Capella sight is UT).

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Great plugin!!!

Works fine on my mac. Did a sight on Venus with a good fix!

However on my windows pc I got the same windows 10 problem as described before.

Do I understand there is a fix for this? Where can I download this new version? I've got 2.0 at the moment..

Nice work, Deep

@Deepboel
What do you mean "Windows 10 problem"? Can you reference a link or something?
Trying to understand.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Goodmorning,

Sorry if I was unclear. In my windows 10 pc I can enter 1 sight. If I enter the second sight the plugin and open cpn will crash. I did read about this problem in this forum earlier this month.. But I didn't read about the solution.

I ám preparing for our Pacific crossing next month! I totally love this plugin!! On my mac it's working fine, but on my navigation pc (windows 10) I've got the above mentioned problem..

Thanks
