Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Well, all is applicable, I think. However, in the thread reference is made to 'different' tabulation and calculation methods for altitude corrections (NA, HO249, Blewitt, direct computation). This can be very confusing for anybody new in celestial navigation.

Several free Cel Nav Programs
Celestial Navigation Windows, also Linux & mac under wine

They all provide different functionality.

I don't remember. Last time I mentioned this (a year or two ago), someone said who it was. But they hadn't been around for quite some time even then.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

The Celestial Navigation plugin doesn't work on OpenCPN 4.0.
That is; it installs in the proper directory but doesn't appear as one of the plugins available from Tools.

'Wish it'd work as it's a great plugin since it draws Circles of Equal Altitude.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Don't know if this really helps, but Celestial Nav version 1.10 runs on Windows just tried it.

Very glad you like it. Pavel and Sean and others worked hard to bring it to this point! Please post your experiences and ideas when you get it running.

The most recent date I compiled it was 9/15/2014.
To my knowledge there have been no changes since then, and it should run because all plugins are forward compatible.

Are you compiling plugins under Linux? Can you git clone again and compile again maybe?

Also ... do as Pavel says, he's the guru.

PS I had a Virtualbox system with Linux Ubuntu 12.04LTS for several years. I think Pavel is on 14 now.

Vector Solution for the intersection of two Circles of Equal Altitude

Vector solution 2 CoP for Android

From Navigational Algorithms: Celestial navigation.Fix by two circles of position: vector solution. With a sextant take two altitudes, correct them and obtain the observed altitudes: Ho.Take the Nautical Almanac and find the coordinates of the celestial bodies: GHA, declination.Use this app to calculate the two solutions, and to plot the circles of position, or circles of equal altitude on a google maps.Running fix:- The app moves the first sight to the time of the second, taking into account the motion of the observer.Method explained in the papers:- Vector Solution for the intersection of two Circles of Equal Altitude. (Andrs Ruiz Gonzlez. Journal of Navigation 2008, 61:355-365. The Royal Institute of Navigation).- Use of rotation matrices to plot a circle of equal altitude. (Andrs Ruiz. JOURNAL OF MARITIME RESEARCH, Vol 8, N3, 2011)Available on the author's website.Content rating: High Maturity

Andres Ruis website is no longer at Geocities but here
https://sites.google.com/site/navigationalalgorithms/

and here is the C++ code for the Vector solution of two CoEA.

Perhaps this could be added to the Celestial Navigation plugin?

Also it may serve as a way to make the 3 fix solution better because it could solve for movement of the first sight iteratively, similar to this solution.
"Running fix: - The app moves the first sight to the time of the second, taking into account the motion of the observer."

Nav, any thoughts on this?

Here is his full Android App

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

The plugin Celestial Navigation v110a seems not to run within OpenCPN 4.2 (and possibly 4.1 too). I'll do some more tests.

Edit: It certainly doesn't work. Black OpenCPN window and OpenCPN stops reacting.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

NAV try the one in 4.1.1317 PI WIN Folder.
I just installed into Opencpn 4.2.0 and it works.
Also check the 4.2 versions of all the plugins that are here
where Pavel has rebuilt for v4.2 PlugIns for OpenCPN 4.2 | Official OpenCPN Homepage
I see a celestial_nav_pi there for v4.2.
