Cant load charts (odd file structure)

Hello-

I'm having difficulty loading some charts of Dominica. The charts are organized is a folder that is somewhat similar to the way the CM93 charts are organized. Under the main folder are sub folders that are titled "M25723S0", "M25723S0", etc. Within the subfolders are the charts themselves with names like "M25723S0.A01", "M25723S0.A02", "M25723S0.B01", etc.

I've tried adding the charts by pointing opencpn to both the high level directory, as well as the subdirectories, without success.

Is anyone familiar with how to get these charts into the program?

These are old Maptech format charts, ca 1990's.

OpenCPN does not support these charts.

There may be a way to convert them to BSB3 charts. Others may have more information on this.

Thanks bdcat! That helps explain why they won't load. If anyone knows how to make them useable with OpenCPN, I'd love to hear about it.

The file formats that OpenCPN can and can't handle are explained here:Chart Formats | Official OpenCPN Homepage

HDR/pcx charts, that you have, have been discussed many times in this forum. The forum search function is your friend.

I think this post:

The work flow is: Join all the pcx-tiles to one big picture. Convert this picture to a chart. See the chart conversion manual on opencpn.org

A script, sort of, is available to join the tiles. Look here,

Note that this script is for Linux. It may be possible to do a windows version.

It is important to understand what the script does, as the tile naming scheme may have to be adjusted to fit the individual hdr chart.

So all of this is quite a lot of work to acquire 20 years old DMA charts. Certainly more so, if you start from scratch.

If you have access to CM93 charts, there is no need to go through all this, as basically, these charts are already included.
