Can't get started

Windows 10, Firefox

Just downloaded 4.8.8 twice. I have been using Fugawi 4.0 but it is no longer supported. I followed users manual. Can't initiate charts plug in. I'm just stalled right at the beginning. In my start menu there are 2 cpn prog.: Open CPN and Open CPN-NO Open GL whatever that is. When I open cpn all I get is a large map with a tool bar at the top. Zoom,? and OPTIONS functions work. When I select Options/plugins/chart downloader/apply and thats when it ends. I can't figure out how to proceed. I'm missing something. HELP!

Re: Can't get started

OK. I stumbled around until I was able to load charts and I put a few in to practice. I'll work on it. I obviously need additional plugins to measure distances etc. Thanks

Re: Can't get started

Hi there,
I am experiencing the same issue as you in that I can not load maps properly, I can see maps but I can not load any symbols, signs or depths ect…
I have copied the details like for like from the installation guide however still not working.
I have a separate computer which is my work computer and that works really well...the computer that does not work is my boat computer.

Re: Can't get started

Once yo have played around with OpenCPN it really pays off to read the manual.
The manual is distributed with OpenCPN and is easily to get to. Press the button that looks like a blue book with a "?" on, in the toolbar. Then press "Help" and the manual should start in your web-browser.
All documentation is also available via https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=opencpn

@crabmann
No, you don't need extra plugins to measure a distance. Just right-click anywhere on the screen and click "Measure" in the pop up menu.

@pblackuk
It sounds like you are talking about vector-charts. These charts are very different from the normal raster-chart. There are a lot of settings available, that you need to understand. Please read through this page https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=opencpnpencpn_user_manual:charts:vec tor_display_tab

If you need more help, you need to tell us much more details. Exactly what did you do?

Re: Can't get started

I worked with it until I found everything I needed (at least for now). Seems to work really well. Finding the chart I want and applying it is still a little sketchy but it works. Thanks to all for the replies.
