Can't export waypoints to Garmin GPS 12?

Hi!
I have recently installed OpenCPN to try it out and I have sorted most issues out.

I am testing at home with a Garmin GPS 12 instead of the Garmin GPS 128 that I have onboard. My plan is to use OpenCPN on my computer down in the for navigation connected to the Garmin GPS in the cockpit and also control the autopilot from the GPS. To get this to work the GPS need to talk NMEA instead of the Garmin protocol.

When I try to export waypoints all seems fine in OpenCPN, the program says that the export went well, I can see it in the NMEA stream and it looks allright to me:
$ECWPL,5754.280,N,01136.956,E,test*4A

The GPS receives the export but says "Invalid waypoint".

I have been searching the internet and tried different NMEA-related software without any success. Is there anyone who has encountered the same problem or has any idea?

I don't know anything about the Garmin 12 but, OpenCPN can upload waypoints in Garmin mode. There is a checkbox in Tools>Connections.

Thank you for replying!
The problem is that the Garmin GPS 12 (and probably 128 as well) cannot mix interfaces so I am stuck with either NMEA in and out or GARMIN in and out and even if OpenCPN can take GARMIN in as well as out, the autopilot can only take either NMEA or SeaTalk...

I have tried different names to rule that out since I know that the old Garmins only can have short names and probably just plain english characters and numbers.
In the example NMEA sentence above I used the name 'test'.

I have a 128 and put it in garmin / garmin mode to up load or down load waypoints, then turn it to nmea mode when connected to the lap top.

It is possible to send a way point in nmea some how as my yeoman plot board does so, but I haven't examined the sentences to see how.

You must use Garmin/Garmin mode to upload waypoints to the GPS 12 (and the GPS 72). Once the waypoints are uploaded you can switch back to NMEA mode. As far as I know, all Garmin units will only accept waypoint uploads in Garmin mode.
