Hello all,

Is there any canadian cruisers on here that know where or how to get charts for canadian waters that work on open cpn without paying an arm and a leg to the government?

Re: Canadian charts

As I understand it, Her Majesty Printer sold the distribution rights to a commercial distributor. I don't know for how long the contact runs, but I wouldn't think we are going to see a change in the near term. This was seen as a cost effective solution before the advent of a internet.

Re: Canadian charts

Canadian charts do cost. To give it some perspective the cost of the CD of the West Coast of Vancouver is $175; the cost of 9 paper charts.

Re: Canadian charts

You buy the charts from CHS. In the scheme of things its a relatively minor expense. A major annoyance because we the taxpayer paid for the survey and now we have to pay again to use the information but still a relatively minor expense when stacked against the myriad other boat expenses.

Yep, you have to pay twice, that's how out Gov't works, it even has instances of tax on top of tax. That's why the world loves Canada, the proof that socialism works. While the Country goes slowly broke.

A few years ago I priced out a chart package from CHS that would cover the Maritimes going down the St. Lawrence, around Gaspe, south around PEI, and around Nova Scotia to the Bay of Fundy. It would have been well over $600 (this was for a planned trip that took seven weeks). I would not call that a relatively minor expense. Lucky I found US Department of Defense greyscale charts of the same area for under $200 from Bellingham Printers.

Sadly, Bellingham is rumored to be out of business, and now the only choice appears to be CHS.

Re: Canadian charts

As an - neither free - option you can check S-63 charts at Chartworld.
They have some regional chart bundles (Navionics charts encoded as S-63/S-57) which you can complete with single S-63 cells if required.

In the case of S-63 consider to license minimum periods (three months).
You won't have updates after this period, but the chart stays.

First happy new year,

Second ... In reading you, I have the impression of hearing a Frenchman ... Even criticisms of the liberal choice of your government!
Decidedly, globalization is really moving in all areas
