No, it does not output NMEA data and OpenCPN does not implement the bluetooth binary protocol it uses.

Re: Calypso Ultrasonic Portable
You could use the wired version or the Calypso NMEA Connect with the portable.
Or you could write the software to make it work.

Re: Calypso Ultrasonic Portable
Calypso sells a Bluetooth to NMEA0183 converter. It will pair with the wireless ultrasonic wind instrument and output wired NMEA 0183 data to your MFD or network. It will also take 0183 data from your MFD and output it via bluetooth to monitor via tablet or smartphone.
I was just looking at this same device myself. I like the idea of the ultrasonic wind transducer, no vanes or cups to break.

Re: Calypso Ultrasonic Portable
Airmar and Maretron both do ultrasonic wind instruments.
I use the Airmar version ( model PB200). This is almost all you need for OpenCPN, except depth. GPS, Compass/gyro, wind, barometric pressure and temperature.
Because it has the compass and accelerometers if gives very accurate readings even in rough conditions. It provides True and Apparent wind. They can output NMEA0183 or N2K. The N2K output only gives the barometric pressure in whole HPa although it has enough digits to give two decimal places. Airmar have misinterpreted the N2K standard I believe and won't budge. The NMEA0183 HPa output is I believe accurate.
I log all NMEA data to files using GPSGate. Here's a post-processed analysis of the wind data on a voyage.

Re: Calypso Ultrasonic Portable
The wifi model puts out the following sentances, and can be used in AP or infastructure mode.
ULTRA WIRED WIFI out sentences:
$IIMWV,XX,R,XX.XX,N,A*CR\r\n
$HCHDM,XX,M*CR\r\n
$HCHDT,XX,T*CR\r\n
$HCHDG,XX,,,XX,W*CR\r\n
$IIXDR,A,XX,D,ROLL*CR\r\n
$IIXDR,A,XX,D,PTCH*CR\r\n
I presume with openplotter, you could get the wired/wifi or bluetooth models to work well.
Interestingly, nowhere have I seen a recommendation install this at the top of a mast, and some people have been dismissive when I mentioned it.

There really isn't anywhere else to put it on a sailing vessel. Anywhere else will be badly affected by the sails so the readings will be inaccurate in both direction and velocity.

Re: Calypso Ultrasonic Portable
I'm inclinded to agree. Those on Panbo thought otherwise though. That being said, fast trimarans tend to have wind indicators up at the bow.

Well, sure, the best place for the wind indicator on any boat would be a dozen metres in front of the boat but that usually isn't very practical.
Panbo are a funny lot, mostly ICW motor boaters and less tongue in cheek; more interested in technology than with what actually works when you are doing the miles.

Brewgyver - Do you use this setup? I have the Ultrasonic Portable and NMEA Connect from Clypso but have had nothing with trouble from the NMEA connect. Support from the manufacturer is proving very difficult, the last response took one month and simply said my email was being forwarded to their engineers.
The Portable seems to work more or less as advertised and i even figured out a way to mount it on an older Raymarine windvane pole. Its a real shame about the delayed support.
