Bug: 2.5.0 Route " Slides " as Chart is Moved

Often when the chart is scrolled, or zooming is changed, a route loses its proper location relative to the chart. All of the waypoints stay proportionally accurate to each other, but it is as if they are sliding on the map. sometimes, by using the mouse to scroll the map I can realign the route based upon a buoy.

Can you please specify exactly which charts you noticed this problem on?

It has something to do with scaling. Zooming in or out shifts the error.
By the way, Zoom says 0.98x but won't say 1.0 exactly.

I cannot repeat that on a box with the same setup as yours.

What happens if you test a fresh download from Noaa?
Can you repeat the error with other charts?

It happens with all the charts for the same region, even though they are at different scales.

How might a new download from NOAA affect things? Might a new download force OpenCPN to reset some data? I wouldn't think that OpenCPN would open chart files in write mode, so file corruption does not seem likely.

This is potentially a serious error, if a planned navigation route is moved without warning you could be headed for danger.

Re: Bug: 2.5.0 route "slides" as chart is moved

We have seen bad Noaa charts before!
As I just said - I can´t reproduce your error.
Anyone else?

As an alternative, open one of the charts in a text editor. Copy and publish
the text part here.

Thomas

Ps. Please publish the last session of your log file as well.

Ps. Please publish the last session of your log file as well.
1. Problem persists after downloading and replacing new raster chart set from NOAA
2. Below is the header section of a map 12352_3.KAP which reproduces the error
3. I could not find a log file for OpenCPN, just install.og. Nothing else with "log" in program files, or with a modified date in 2012. What is the log file and where is it?
4. There is a difference in the error in two different .gpx files created with OpenCPN when re-imported. That might indicate an error on importing, or exporting.
5. I manually zoomed with Google to the locations in the .gpx files, and they seem off.
6. As a test, I tried creating a new route, exporting to .gpx and re-importing. This time the route returned exactly on the buoys so it looks like it worked fine, but that was with not exiting the program or any zoom adjustments. I also note that the lat&lon from the prior export of .gpx does not match the new test.

Conclusion:

The original .gpx export was off even though visually the marks matched the buoy locations at the time. Don't know if this was an error during the export process, or with OpenCPN's runtime translation between screen coordinates and GPS coordinates during the time that the route was created. This could suggest that there may be scenarios where scrolling and zooming could throw off OpenCPN.

If I run across a repeatable error I'll update this thread.

It might be advisable for all users to include a known fixed point as a waypoint in any .gpx operation so a quick visual confirmation can be made when the .gpx is imported. It's still a little unnerving not knowing what could cause this error, including if it could repeat on its own at runtime, as opposed to being limited to just a .gpx export operation.

Thanks again,
Dave

Note: The testing described above probably makes the following header unnecessary but here it is anyway:

Re: Bug: 2.5.0 route "slides" as chart is moved

Poss scenario but not a bug

If you drop a waypoint on a fixed location such as a bouy zoomed out
When you zoom in the mark appears to slide away from the fixed point
This is not a bug but merely the fact that zoomed out your waypoint appears to be exactly over the bouy but not positioned with anccuracy

solution if you are wanting to position route or waypoint with accuracy zoom in then create the route or waypoint

Dave

It looks like the chart is Ok.
As your test charts are skewed, I had to make sure that the skew angle SK was set correctly. Error in this area has caused similar behavior in the past.

If you try the last beta 2.6.1310, can you still see the problem?

It would be interesting with some screen-dumps, to better understand your problem.

Hi Thomas,
I didn't pick up much about skew angle from searching the manual. I did not install the beta and generally avoid that type of software due to the expected errors. I'll see If uploading a screen dump is easy. The results are simple though, the route is laid out exactly as made, except every waypoint is shifted by a quarter to 1/2 mile. The two original .gpx files have different amounts of shift, roughly in the same direction.

When I get some time, I'm going to play around with zooming to see if I can duplicate the error.

Although it will not add greatly to solving the problem,I can remember some time ago that I had a similar problem. The route seemed to slide across the map when panning or zooming. Must admit it was some time ago and it never occurred since. Perhaps a badly calibrated chart?

My charts appear to be calibrated OK, no error messages. Downloaded a second set from NOAA.

Do you know what caused the route to slide across the map? Is this repeatable? I'm assuming that it is a bug. If the program has a mode, intended or not, where routes slide across the map then the link between the map GPS coordinates and the route GPS coordinates is not fixed.

This sounds like a bug. Is this known? Is there a workaround?

My guess is that it's not GPS vs Route, but GPS vs chart. If the chart is not calibrated right, then when it is displayed it may behave strangely. Could be an incorrect skew, or incorrect datum specified (Mercator vs UTM, etc.)

If I am right, then if you put your mouse on a point on the route it will show the same GPS position no matter where it looks like it moved on the chart. But put the mouse on a particular feature on the chart, and the position may change as you pan around.

Re: Bug: 2.5.0 Route " Slides " as Chart is Moved

@dave777

Can you please export your route to a gpx file and attach it to a post here?
Don't forget to stick a ".doc" to the end of the filename.(route.gpx.doc)
How was your route created?

@Dan
Please test 12352_3.KAP (Long Island NY). I'm unable to repeat the problem on a XP box. I have tested both Chart up and North up.
