BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [pics]

Hi everyone,

First off, I apologize that my first post is a call for help, hopefully others can benefit from this question. So I'm doing some trip planning to Vancouver Island BC, here is what I'm using:

OpenCPN v.2.4.720
2011 Cdn Hydrographic Service PAC02 BSB4charts (East Vancouver Island)
BSB4 v1.0
Windows 7 Starter netbook
Globalsat BU353 USB mouse

Problem: Everything looks right but charts are not showing up in OpenCPN.

Here is the product: 2011 CHS PAC02 BSB4 charts, it was installed successfully on the computer after entering the product ID / Key

After the installation, it created these two folders:

The "encryption" folder has a couple of dll's, not sure if they should go somewhere (ie: the plugins folder?)

Got the BSB4 v1.0 plugin enabled in OpenCPN

Chart folder added

And no charts!

Your log, opencpn.log will probably tell you the answer.
See FAQ | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Publish the log file here if you need further help.

Thanks for the tip, here is the log:

I'm going to guess that OCPN can't find any of those encryption files. I have nothing in my encryption folder wth those file extensions.

makonnen
It looks like you are pointing OpenCPN to find charts in C:\ChartKit\Encryption folder, instead of, as I would expect from your pictures, C:\ChartKit\BSBChart.
Change this and try again.

Re: BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [PICS]

Thanks Thomas,

Actually what I did was I put all the *.BSB, *.CAP, *.cet, chartreg.dll, crypt0201.dll files into one single folder then pointed OCPN to that folder and it worked.

The CHS program has an installer, and when installed, the above listed files are spread between three different folders.

edit: Thanks again for the tip on the log file, I wouldn't be able to fix it without first seeing that file. Hopefully this will help others.

Hey guys,

I'm posting this for anyone installing Canadian BSB4 charts in the future...

I just installed OpenCPN on a second computer and had no problems installing the BSB4 encrypted charts ... the simple trick is that you must add the folder called "Encryption" FIRST and then EXIT openCPN.

Then start OpenCPN again and all the BSBCharts folder.

Re: BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [PICS]

I'm quite surprised the charts are encrypted. None of the stuff we get in the navy from CHS is. I guess we're spoiled.

I have to say, though, that it really... really irks me that UKHO and CHS both charge for charts. That is one thing the Americans got right.

Re: BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [PICS]

excuses?..Uk is broke.Canada has a huge coastline and a small taxbase. Both make excellent charts at great cost in equipment and training.Plus,Yachties aren't a big voter base...Finally Paper Charts always did cost money, everywhere.

If you like, the USA are an exuberant and generous folk ...

Re: BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [PICS]

The issue of chart cost isn't about how much of a lobby group yacht-owners have. In fact it's not about yacht-owners at all. It's about maritime safety. I've boarded a whole lot of merchies, and I can't tell you how often I find they are coming into our harbours with badly outdated, wrong scale, or even missing charts. Or worse, they are navigating in our waters off of some terrible, ancient American DNC chart that came with their ECDIS. And yet their charts of US waters are almost always complete and relatively up-to-date.

ECDIS systems are a boon for yacht-owners - they have the money and inclination to keep good, up-to-date charts. But merchant ship groundings and collisions with nav aids have increased in Canadian waters since they were adopted.

it's a bit off topic,but aren't foreign ships without a Canadian-ticketed skipper supposed to engage a Pilot?

Re: BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [PICS]

Yes, they do get pilots but some of our pilot stations are pretty close in - like in the St. Lawrence. And surprisingly large ships will get nervous and tuck into some little nook when a nor'easter blows in. West coast (Guilf Island area) has some pretty tight navigation areas that you don't necesarily have a pilot on board for. And besides that, there's a lot of buoyage in traffic lanes out beyond pilotage areas. The Canadian Coast Guard spends a small fortune replacing ODAS buoys and other stuff that big merchies run over because their charts don't show them, or show them wrong.

the B*ggers,eh?!True enough,I see that now..but you're scarin' me,Kudalfi!
I can't help but imagine foreign tankers "tucking into little nooks" ... on their way to Kitimaat. We'll need more coastal patrol in that event...
Aaargh!

Happy Seagull, I was there in 1964 (Kitimat) and at the time we did not have all that technology and we made it safely; but in those days there were iron man doing their jobs. Forget about the navy they are 20 on the bridge looking outside!

I read from history that "overmanning" in the Navy has a bloody purpose...anyways we're off the topic and sorry.

Re: BSB4, 2011 Canadian Chart Problem [pics]

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to the group, and I'm sure glad this group exists.

I am having a problem getting my OpenCPN to "Initialize" my new CHS BSB4.0 charts in C:\ChartKit
I point at C:\ChartKit and OpenCPN gives it the name "Chart directory #1: C:\ChartKit", but as you can see, it doesn't "Install" any BSB4 charts.
