Re: Best electronic Charts for...

This is great and I appreciate this. I turned on my old Del 1505 and forgot that while sharing an anchorage with a wood 45 footer which lost its keel (another story), the owner put CM93 on my desktop. Although i apparently do not have the right program to open them. Maybe I'll try to put them on a thumb driva and install them on this Toshiba SSD Laptop.

Re: Best electronic Charts for...

OpenCPN can read CM93 charts. Just add the top folder where the CM93 charts are stored to the list of chart folders in OpenCPN. Go to Options->Charts->Chart Files and click "Add Directory".

The Netherlands keep changing their file formats and locations. We hope they will settle on something and stick with it. If they keep changing formats and locations we may consider dropping them from the downloader as they require constant updates to the downloader database.

If you send me the latest links I can try to update the database.

You may have already considered this, but how about a function to update the ChartDownloader's database ?

Cheers,
JM.

Arrrr . . .

But be extremely careful -- many available downloads of CM93 have horrible virus infections in them. Best of all, take a copy from a trusted fellow cruiser.

Note also that the last version of CM93 is missing some of the detail of the next to last (don't ask me which ones these are).

Lastly, keep in mind that these are NOT FOR NAVIGATION. They are not up to date, not official, not legal, pirated charts. I emphasize: they are NOT UP TO DATE. Use them only for basic planning, if you use them at all (many people will say it's not moral -- you have to make up your own mind -- and in any case at your own risk and on your own conscience).

Then, buy up-to-date licensed charts from Jeppesen (the owner of the CM93 sets) for those areas where you will actually be.

Put those in your chart plotter, maybe, and use O on a laptop for planning and/or nav table use.

It is not responsible to sail without updated, official cartography of some kind. If you run into an obstacle which is shown on updated charts, because it's not shown on whatever chart you have, it is all your fault.

Thread drift! But you can get absolutely fabulous raster charts of the Netherlands (and UK and Belgium) from visitmyharbour.com, for very little money. You get free updates for a year for the price of your license. They are official FOR NAVIGATION charts.

One should denote here perhaps that there are two flavors of CM93 maps - CM93v2, which are the not encrypted floating around sets mentioned in the thread and CM93v3, the ones Jeppesen is licensing today. No version or plug-in for OpenCPN for the latter.

(C-Map)CM93v3 are not official charts in the strict sense neither. They are on the same level as Garmin, Navionics or Transas TX97 sets. All more less up to date.

On the other hand the raster charts from VisitMyHarbor are directly derived (=exact copies) from official charts, but due to restrictions from the copyright holders you can't call those "official" neither - Dockhead, I have to correct you here (with the corresponding license contract of Admiralty on my desk...)

Official vector charts you get for the US for free in form of the S-57 ENCs or for the rest of the world as encrypted S-57 sets, also know as S-63s. For the latter we have the pertinent plug-in for OCPN.

Re: Best electronic Charts for...

Great that this thread has the latest Dutch maps as a link.

Thanks for that!

They install, but I can see marks only when zoomed in a fair amount. Even when having their display magnification set to a high level.
Can this be adjusted?Seem to have the same issue with other raster charts from Openseamap.

Would be nice if someone can advise.

Thanks,

Franziska

From my visitmyharbour license:

"Charts are fully licensed FOR NAVIGATION"

They have a master license from Her Majesty's Hydrographic Office with the right to resell. So this information is false.

Aart,

We don't use the "Netherlands Complete" file set. We use the three file sets. Can you point me to the web page where mere mortals can download the chart sets? That is what I need to update the database. I cannot use the link you provided.

Aart,

Ok, I found the web address. Can you open the file Nederland.7z? All my zip utilities say that file is not an archive and refuse to open it.
