Re: Australian East Coast Charts

Frans,

I apologise in advance for my lack of technical knowledge on Open CPN however I know there are not official Open CPN charts for Australia. The last "version" are very old and are generally copied from one cruiser to the next. These files are not current and many years old and not updatable

Unlike many other countries that consider giving free charts saves money by not having ships running aground, Australia require that you purchase all charts. The latest are not compatiable for Open CPN.

Scott

Re: Australian East Coast Charts

We used BSB charts while in Australia. They were very good and looked exactly like the AUS paper charts we had onboard!

We also used C-maps. These seemed slightly less detailed.

The BSB and the C-maps can be displayed side-by-side on one screen with the ship tracked on both at the same time (MaxSea). I liked this function very much. At times the positions did not quite agree.

All came free as we swapped with other cruisers. You may be able to get them if you go to your local marina and ask around.

Re: Australian East Coast Charts

I have the sample S57 cell (Torres Strait) on opencpn but the chart pack is S63. Will it display on opencpn and if not is there an alternative cheap or free plotter on which it will display?

Just download cm93 maps, I have been using them. Jervis Bay to Port Douglas not a problem except a few areas of no survey (mostly shallow creeks and a biggy at Thomas Island.
