Are you an XML expert? Tropical Storm Layer

Hi All,
I'd like to create a set of layer files containig all historical tropical storm tracks by month and ocean basin. Seems like it would be a great planning tool to be able to visually answer a question like "Where do tropical storms tend to track in June in the East Pacific?"

I can get the data and prepare it in Excel. My problem is that I know very little about XML (the format used by GPX files) and how to export the waypoints into a GPX track format. It is not something that can be done manually as, for example, there are over 1,000 storms in the East Pacific Basin file (and 26,000 data points).

The resulting files from this project would be available for free to everyone.

Anyone out there have XML/GPX experience and would like to work with me on this?

Hello bbalan,

Did you have a go with the climatology pluggin written by Boat Alexandra ? this pluging contains climate data over over 30 years.

Not a GPX/xml expert, but I have written several VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) routines to convert data stored in an Excel worksheet to a GPX file (vice versa) that can be imported by OpenCPN. That code is not a general conversion tool, but I can probably adapt it to process your workbook data. If you are interested PM me and we can arrange for you to send me a sample of your data. I will then attempt to provide an Excel workbook with the embedded VBA code to export your data to GPX files.

Gentlemen, Contribute you skills to some other opencpn needs, please, we need your skills... However you should be aware that the plugin Climatology has hurricanes (Cyclones) covered very well. You should try it! Sean has done a great job.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I hadn't seen the climatology pi. It is awesome! Now I don't have to do any work. I'll contact Sean about possibly adding more historical data. And give him a donation because he clearly put in a lot of effort.
