Re: Android Development Underway

Barnakiel..

MX Mariner is supposed to be a near cousin of OpenCPN but it is NOT free and therefore changes the concept of Open Source use.

Unless someone else here has the ability to port OpenCPN onto Android,I would recommend the FREE OruxMaps nav. prog. for Android. It has the important ability to let the user install and use his own .kap maps. Although under development,it already have most of the important navigation features.
You can also import optimized routes using gribs from qtVlm as gpx or kml files.

Re: Android Development Underway

I have most of the apps that are mentioned. The others I will try. I have used both Droid and iPad. After using both for work, gave the iPad to assistant . The android on the other hand . For me much better.

Hi,

Nice software.

When do you expect to implement an AIS screen or an AIS overlay?

MX Mariner OpenSource or not?

Will,

I have not followed this thread closely since I don't have an Android platform to play with, but did you not initially say that MX mariner is released under the 2-clause BSD (FreeBSD) license as open source.

If so it is indeed very "free" indeed.

As far as i understood it it is the bundling of charts for US users that cost money.

Did I miss something?

I don't object if it is not "cost-free" anymore, it is after all very close to being free money wise ... but the source code would of course be good if it is available.

It would maybe be good with a pointer to the source and where the application can be downloaded for the "free" version. The only one i saw when clicking on the download button is the commercial version.

Sailias, is there any way we can get the old NOAA data for Canadian Waters? I have an interest in the Northwest Passage, and would really like to have better charts, even thought they aren't current. Thanks.

Barnakiel, I don't have any dates assigned to the release schedule but you can find it here.

Jonas,

I publish MX Mariner source on a delayed schedule. We're currently on the 1.3 branch so the 1.1 branch is published here. All of the source code to create MX Mariner compatible charts is also published here. The only official compiled MX Mariner is published on Google Play here.

No...as they only cover the great lakes portions and the Canadian side. A good reference but not accurate of course. Follow these guys and note that a lot of folks donated paper charts upon request. They tend to circulate between travelers going that route....something Ive pondered myself as I used to work up there.

Re: Android Development Underway

Will -- I used MX Mariner a lot this summer and it was a pleasure. Especially that morning coming from Little Whaleboat Island in Casco Bay back to Portland, in a heavy fog. . . .

Two little things I thought would be helpful to add to MX:

-- an option in your measuring tool to measure either "line" or "path," as Google Earth has. Sometimes I wanted to know the distance of, saying passing around an island or around a headland.

-- (I see this one is already on your development schedule) the optional course predictor line in GPS follow mode. Might also help to extend a grayed out or differently colored line over the stern, so we know what to keep dead aft to make a certain course.

Thank you for all your continued work on this excellent app!

Thanks, glad to hear it's working well for you. I really enjoy hearing about people using it.

One way to measure a path is to create a route:

The distance of the route is shown as you move along each point.

This program I love , gets better all the time. Small wish, I use a galaxy tab 2 , the display at the top of the screen is comparatively small when underway. On my phone it's ok but with the extra real estate on the tab 2 could we make it bigger for us old blind fellas. Maybe a configerable opencpn type dashboard even.

colormanz...

I am presently connecting my Galaxy S II to my laptop via Wi-Fi running OpenCPN.

BUT, I agree,it becomes too small for active work and I am also considering the
Galaxy 2 TAB and would be interested to have your practical opinion of it using OpenCPN.

Have attached a screen shot don't know how that will work. I use mine mainly in cellphone range so can switch to Google which I find really good. Haven't been out since new update but maybe tomorrow.

Re: Android Development Underway

Hi again..

Thanks for the screenshot,BUT,it looks a bit small for a Galaxy 10.2

To take a screenshot I belive there is a button at the bottom left
of the unit, unlike the Galaxy S II where you have to press two button simultaneously.

Anyway, let me have your view after your first trip out..

Re: Android Development Underway

I want to ask if you can pull Argentinian raster charts into this, as you have done with Brazilian ones. Argentina has them downloadable on Hidrographics web site since some time now. This will make adoption of MX Mariner quite attractive here, price is friendly but no charts for us is stoper. Unless I am missing something and I could pull them myself, but havent seen any menu to do this (online manual). Thanks. alex
