AIS CPA/TCPA Alarms not sounding

I have a USB speaker attached to my Reaspberry Pi and am running OpenCPN 4.8 (OpenPlotter 0.17). The speaker works fine and sounds when OpenPlotter starts or when I select a .wav or .mp3 file. I can play sounds from YouTube for instance but I cannot get the alarm to sound in OpenCPN.

I select either of the two built in .wav files (which sound OK if I select them from file manager) and then press Test Alert Sound but I hear nothing. The card is defined in /etc/asound.conf as card 1. In OpenCPN I have tried Options>User Interface>Sound Device Index as -1, 0, 1 and 2 and none of them result in a sound being heard when I press Test Alert Sound (Tools>Options>AIS Targets).

Any ideas how I can make this work? I don't have an AIS connected at home but I expected the Test button to work.

Many thanks

Let me ask a simpler question then:

Can anyone confirm please that pressing the "Test Alert Sound" button actually does make a sound?

Many thanks

Thanks for that. I wonder if there's a problem then on the Pi with a USB speaker.

Does that button call omxplayer to play the sound or another utility?

OK on W10 as well.

When I set up my RPi's with OP the HDMI sound was not working. I did find online how to enable it, but now can't remember how. Does your HDMI sound output work?

Good point, the HDMI check is something I haven't tried but will do. Every other application on the Pi that generates a sounds works perfectly well with the USB speaker except OP.

I'd like to find what app OpenPlotter calls to manipulate the .WAV files but have had no luck yet. I assumed it was omxplayer but not certain.

I will try the HDMI option.
Thanks
