After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

Hello

I am having problems with ENC charts for CA after v 5 upgrade and fresh download of CA charts. ENCs for CA worked fine before. ENCs for Washington state work fine.

My display looks like the image for all of CA. It is like the chart is not there, except the background. All the objects are there.

I have tried

1. scan charts and update database
2. force full database rebuild
3. Downloading the ENCs again (and again)
4. I see message that it is "preparing vector chart..." when I zoom in or out
5. I have played with options\display\advanced vector sliders

Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Ricky

Re: After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

RickyEM,

You have illustrated the problem, and tried several things, but we need more details to help you.
What are:
OS?
Exact Version of Opencpn 5?
Graphics Card: Manuf and Model
Pathname /Location of Chart Directory?
Pathname / Location of ENC Charts?
Have you used the file browser to confirm the exact location of the ENC charts?
Have you confirmed that that is the path you are using in Opencpn?

Confirmation that you have your correct ENC directory selected.
  • Screenshot of your Options > Charts > Chart Files (Directories)
  • Screenshot of your Options > Charts > Chart Groups
  • Screenshot of Right Click hover over "Chart Groups" to show that you have selected the ENC charts.
We acknowledge this message...
  • I see message that it is "preparing vector chart..." when I zoom in or out
  • You have chart rectangles in the screen.
Please provide your opencpn.log file and opencpn.ini or opencpn.conf files uploaded as .txt or .doc or .pdf if it is too big.

Did you try to click on any of the blue and green rectangles at the bottom of the screen?

RickyEM

Looking at the logfile, I see an access or permission problem with your ProgramData directory.

Re: After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

The problem returns after I reboot after a re-install of openCPN. If I uninstall and reinstall openCPN the ENCs display fine. As soon as I reboot the problem returns and the ENC charts don't display. I realize this is not a problem with your software, but if you could suggest how I might trouble shoot this on my computer. Thanks

Re: After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

After reboot, can you get to the chart directories with your browser?
If so, confirm that you are using the exact same pathname in OpenCPN.

Also try, from within Opencpn, in the Chart Directory tab, reestablishing the paths with Browse.

Let us know if there are changes to your pathnames that help.

RickyEM...

Read the logfile. Look for the word "error".

I tried reestablishing the paths with Browse as you suggest. No change in problem. The paths to the downloaded ENC charts is fine in OpenCPN the problem is with the data directory C:\ProgramData\opencpn\SENC\. Some charts load and some don't. The ones that don't load report error 5: Access is denied in the log file...

Here are some samples from the log file:

Re: After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

Update to above message and log file.

The files referred to in the log files with errors do NOT exist in the C:\ProgramData\opencpn\SENC\ directory.

Any suggestions on how to continue trouble shooting this problem. Like I said, if I uninstall and reinstall OpenCPN everything works fine until I restart the computer and then the problem begins with the C:\ProgramData\opencpn\SENC\ directory...

Re: After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

Note the positions of spaces before or after the "." in the problem file names.

I would be surprised if they should be there.

That points to possible entry errors in an ini file somewhere or a name error in some .000 files that are being initialised.

8:09:58 PM: S57chart::Checking SENC file: C:\ProgramData\opencpn\SENC\016EC3B2263C_US3CA14M. S57
8:09:58 PM: Error: can't open file 'C:\ProgramData\opencpn\SENC\016EC3B2263C_US3CA14M .S57' (error 5: Access is denied.)

Error 5 can be triggered by several different causes. The file name in the second line is different to the first line! So the Error 5 is probably a "File does not exist" rather than a "File Locked" or "No rights to read the file" issue.

RickyEM...

There seems to be some trouble with permissions on ProgramData

Google "ProgramData access denied". Lots of hits here, like:

Re: After v 5 upgrade display problem ENC charts

After sorting out the permissions, I might remove a group of the charts causing trouble then use chartdownloader to redownload. Then rebuild the database.
