Sorry to be so naive about this but am trying to get into this openCPN vibe ..... Where can I find a 'beginners thread' on this?
Currently on Raymarine plotter with navionic charts but would love to learn more about openCPN and downloading charts.

aah.You want an adjustable icon...you'd probably want it to swing around a particular adjustable centre too...

So why just carry a little passel of ownships to suit the most common situations? It'd be easy to substitute them as required...Make a thumbnail image too and put each "ownship"in it's own folder, that folder having a thumbnail image to represent it for easy selection.

....I don't know if OpenCPN that uses charts and "downloading Charts" necessarily go together but try this:
OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage

the subject certainly comes up..

and there's a help file per OpenCPN right here in this forum..

I was avoiding the whole thing due to the technical language being used but it certainly pricked my interest and suddenly I want to know more about how it Can assist me in my navigational needs. Many thanks - will certainly check out the web

Oh yer welcome!
Don't forget that freedom loving country ,USA ,gives free charts and you can get one or two or three just to familiarize yourself and see how it all works, even if you are not in the US now. You'll find links at OpenCPN.org

Paul, you don't need to make different boat, all is needed is to make one properly with the necessary change in the program. Someone must certainly know what change must be made and where! I am ncludng jpg of the layout as it should be.

Re: A Little Help Needed

There's always...the clean install option...it's easy, uninstall including all settings (even unto deleting the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\ folder altogether -then reinstall.

You've likely thought of that and also trying a beta on your other machine...If I were doing THAT,I would copy the two important folders of the old 2.3 off to a safe place so you can put them back after.Open CPN seems to run as a portable if you don't mind putting these folders into the right places...I do this every time I put a newer beta on or want to update a the boat's laptop ...it saves a bit of time, since all my machines are pretty much clones as to chart locations etc.

I do like changing my ownship and it would p me off ,too, not being able to have it.

PaulM,here's something to try.Left field.Fooling around,I discovered that you can make a FOLDER called OWNSHIP and put your ownship.xpm in it and it works..at least in this 3.4.708 beta I'm using...

and here's another ownship to try
ownship.xpm.doc

Re: A Little Help Needed

HS.
Ok, It's official my computer is ornery. I tried the “OWNSHIPS” folder. It didn’t work. Did a fresh install. It’s the same. The good news is this is not the computer I use on the boat. It would be nice to be able to change the stock “ownship”. I find it too big. I did notice that even though the file is renamed “ownship.xpm” it’s still a word doc. I agree it's got to be ez.
