A Library of Layers

It's time to tap into the potential of Layers in OpenCPN.
To stimulate this, I created a page in the wiki for this Layers Library | Official OpenCPN Homepage, containing four samples.
Hopefully, we can create a comprehensive library together.
Some people may already have some layers. Why not publish them here, or pm me , and I'll make sure that they will appear on the wiki.

Note that the WEEZ.gpx is a real resource hog. It's way to big for OpenCPN to handle in an acceptable manner, at the moment.

Re: A Library of Layers

Thomas,

Congratulations on wonderful examples...

For a start, I attach here some collections of marks, that partially already appeared during testing of layers:

- European lighthouses
- North Sea and Baltic platforms
- some TSS and restricted areas in Europe
- couple of windfarms

I tried to produce a real list of lights (>12 NM) from the .pdf NGA Publications 110-116, but gave up.

Making layers as notes for own use is one thing, making them for publication is another...

Cheers,

Piotr

Re: A Library of Layers

NTMs might be another application for layers:
same as in a paper chart you put the modifications on top of the chart.
Crossed out buoys, new hazards, new lights or even a new harbor layout as a small bitmap chart scanned in.

Re: A Library of Layers

OCPN's 'Additional information' feature accessed through the Route Manager and created/edited by MarinePoi,contributed by Michel,is an ideal candidate for layers. Multiple information poi's entered in your charts can be saved as one.gpx file in a new subdirectory 'layers' created in the same directory as your OCPN .ini file. This main file will automatically be imported to the layers section at startup time and the icons can be switched off/on as required but will not be accidentally moved or deleted from your charts.

Re: A Library of Layers

Attached is a set of waypoints with links to weather information on the Internet. I find it easier to use than browser bookmarks. The set contains a layer directory and some suitable Usericons. The area is Europe without the Med, Atlantic, and the route across Pacific to SE Asia. It is easily extendable (or shrinkable), of course.

Thanks Piotr..

Yes I agree, more easily accessed and you can just click 'the eye' to hide it.

I have included the WX_WOLD.gpx in my POI library.

Re: A Library of Layers

As you all know there are two ways to create/edit POI files for OCPN.
One way is using GE, the other preparing a series of marks in OCPN containing place names and geo locations which are exported to a .gpx file from the Route Manager's waypoints area.

Paul is presently busy extending the use of his CE2GPXKML conversion program to include importing a previously created .gpx file and creating/editing the URL's or local files to the POI's. This means you will be able to create POI's independently of internet access.

The POI depository created is only meant to be a starting point for the building up of useful contents to the cruising sailor and are in many cases just set up as a POIcontainer, awaiting input from the users. I am using a special INFO icon which you can also download from the depository if you wish. http://www.4shared.com/folder/EFf9eWg_/FINAL_.html

Looking forward to receiving POI contributions from YOUR areas.
