2.5.0 Still with Chart Edge Drawing Problems

Well folks I'm back! I'm sad to report that 2.5.0 now correctly draws chart borders (purple) even with quilting enabled and... it still slows the machine down to a crawl. I just thought you'd like to know. Back to 1.3.6.

Toggle F9, and read up on the documentation. There are some changes compared to earlier versions.

Re: 2.5.0 Still with Chart Edge Drawing Problems

Dave:
I had reported originarily here OpenCPN 2.3.x Much Slower than 1.3.6? with the 2.3.x series.
I had mentioned it again here OpenCPN Version 2.4 Release Candidate 714 in the RC714 thread.
Short summary:
several different office workstations - big machines, quad core with lots of GBs of RAM and SSD hard drives, Win7/64 and XP/32. I use CM93v2 charts of preference, but raster charts converted to .kap format appeared to have the same issue (I did not test them with 2.5.0 however because the chart directory window is partly broken, it doesn't descend directories any more).
As soon as I enable show chart borders - the purple lines in CM93 - OpenCPN slows to a crawl. Before 2.5.0, if I enabled quilting the chart borders disappeared and the speed came back. 2.5.0 correctly shows the borders even with quilting enabled and, sad to say, this causes the slowness again. By slowness I mean that I will hit zoom and count to 6 or 7 before OpenCPN refreshes... not a slight sluggishness.
I just wanted to report that the bug is still there and very much alive - and mind, 1.3.6 did NOT have the same problem.
Small update: with raster charts, the problem is not as bad, possibly because there are significantly fewer outlines?
Cagney: thanks for the reply. As far as I can tell, F9 toggles quilting. The thing is, quilting is not the problem.

lfabio

Considering that your system seems to behave .... different.
Do you have the ability to compile your own version, from the source code?
It would be interesting to see how that panned out!

Just tried edges turned on with quilting on or off on a samsung nc10 atom processor and 2 gb ram opencpn 2.5.With edges turned on cannot detect any loss of performance or increased redraw times

Regards

Richard

Yes cagney, I certainly can. Visual C++? Aigh . OK, I'll get around to it.
