Which Windlass

Hi all,

I have a 1980 Morgan OI 33' Pilothouse and need a new part for my windlass. It is the "nylon?" piece that stops the rode from going around the "bobin/wheel again and directs it down into the chain/ride locker. Does anybody perhaps know what make/model windlass's were put onto Morgans around that time please?

Thanks
Mark

I would include a photo, but I'm not sure how to do that?

Windlass could have been a factory option or owner installed so hard to guess.

Attaching a photo isn't too hard.

1. Take picture and save on your computer. Don't forget where you saved it.

2. Click on "Reply" to start a new post.

3. Under the box where you're typing stuff look down to the next box labeled "Additional Options". Inside that box you see an option to click on "Manage Attachments".

4. That pops up a window with a few lines in it. Click on the "Browse" option and show it where the picture is on your computer.

5. Then click on "Upload" and your photo will load into the post.

Tadaa!

On the iPhone, when you tap on the reply box an icon that looks like a camera appears at the lower left corner. This allows you to take a picture. Next to it is another icon that looks like a picture of a mountain with the moon. This allows you to select a picture from the camera roll.

All this assumes you're using the app.

And without a picture/model number, there is no way to even guess what windlass you've got.
Many people falsely assume a boat manufacturer, especially with older boats, are like auto manufacturers. They are not, the low volume builds will install equipment that's available at the time, not from specific model spec sheet.

I worked at fisheries supply in Seattle for a year, and always got a chuckle when someone would come over to the customer service desk and ask for a nav light for a 1977 San Juan 24......like we had a book back there that could pinpoint the fixture.

Another option, email the photo to yourself from the iPhone and then load it from your laptop.

Sailmonkey is quite correct about boat parts. The boat builder makes the hull, deck and interior. 99% of everything else they buy from outside manufacturers and can change these suppliers many times over a model life. This includes masts and booms, pumps, lights, winches, windlasses, heads and just about anything else you can think of that's attached to the boat.

I think Pearson bought masts from at least 4-5 different companies for some models that were made for several years.

Re: Which Windlass

If I've understood you correctly the part is called a "stripper" by at least some, if not all windlass manufacturers.
Not to be confused with... erm...

Even if you can't find the correct part its only job is to strip the chain or rope from the gipsy.
A pretty uncomplicated part usually, not hard to make something to do the same job.

Re: Which Windlass

Sounds like OP is after the "Stripper".

Search for stripper with make and model on google (other browsers are available).

Re: Which Windlass

I guess that makes sense. It's a pity they don't have a name and model number on the outside. Guess I'll just have to remove it to find out!

Thanks for your response.

If you can post a photo I'll bet 90% certain someone on the forum will recognize it.

My Simpson-Lawrence had the name and model on a little plate riveted to the front. Could have easily been removed or fallen off. Maybe that happened to yours. I wouldn't start pulling it off just to look for a name on the bottom.

Re: Which Windlass

Search google images for a similar winch?

Is the stripper missing or worn? If worn, it is possible to rebuild the worn area using something like nylon zip ties as a filler material. I've repaired mine with jb weld but not sure how it will go as I haven't put it back into service yet.

Post a photo?

I completely disassembled my S-L windlass and there was nothing anywhere on any part of the whole thing that identified the brand. The only identifier at all was the plate riveted to the outside of the case.

I guess yours might have something inside or under the case but you might be going through a project for no reason.

Lots of pictures of anchor windlasses on line that might help.

That's how I identified my really old unmarked Simpson Lawrence. Then found the manual for a later version - exploded drawing had part numbers too.
