Thinking of Doing the Great Loop?

So, I am putting this in Challenges as, well... It is a challenge.

So, our fine representatives in Washington DC are considering Legislation on ways to keep invasive species like the Asian Carp and Zebra Muscles segregated and controlled.

Once thing put up to option is to completely shutdown the waterway from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi. Which, in turn, would shutdown the Loop as we know it.

AGLCA has created a petition to take the shutdown option off the table, and find a way to keep the ability for boats to travel the route at minimal costs to the boater. Protect Boater

If you agree with that, then consider signing the petition.

Re: Thinking of Doing the Great Loop?

Thanks for posting a link to the petition. Hydrologic separation of the two water systems might be the only effective means of preventing the Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes (although blocking the Chicago area waterway(s) doesn't address the dozens of other possible points of entry).
I've signed the petition myself – the purpose of it is to stop any legislation requiring total separation of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Basin without also requiring a convenient means of vessel transit (i.e.: Marine Railway) at modest expense to the boater. Vessel transit planning should be part of the process from the start, and cruising-size vessels should be accommodated (30'-60'). The Big Chute Marine Railway on the Trent Severn, for example, can handle boats up to 100' and up to a 26' beam – or up to 91 tons (see pic). The cost of building it is probably a penny to the dollar of the separation project. The volume of boats might require a different plan...but the point is, it needs to be part of the plan, not an afterthought. I posted an article on my site, including information about the legislation: Waterway Cruising Guide | Cruising Guide News
