I should give credit to Off Center Harbor for providing the link.

Re: The Last Voyage of the Sheila Yeates

I hate to second guess a very experienced captain but I have to wonder why he did not end the tow as soon as they cleared the ice. I've read many stories of boats destroyed by tows & this appears to be another example.

Tragic story.

Great submission, Scout! Very interesting.

"Interactive?"

Tricksy, self-indulgent graphics - images fading in and out while scrolling - like some script kiddie's demo reel.

Found it tedious and unwatchable, X'd it halfway down the page.

More annoying than "Lost."

I'll never know the end of either story unless you tie me to a chair and read me the CliffsNotes.

And yes, it's true, I am a grumpy old 2at.

UncleMack,
Perhaps this is more suited to your tastes. Good luck and good sailing.

Good story, sad situation. Almost seems like another instance of failing to ultimately rely upon eyeball mark 1 and gut instinct.

Gotta agree on the fading graphics. Pointless feature that simply increases opacity as the image moves to the top of the screen. This is what happens when script kiddies have too much free time on their hands.

Re: The Last Voyage of the Sheila Yeates

I don't get what the big deal is with the graphics at the top of the pages. Scroll down 2 notches & it goes away. Of course the interactive part is when you click on the pictures you get short videos. Ultimately all that's important is the story. Being a lifelong sailor I could relate.

Re: The Last Voyage of the Sheila Yeates

The loss of the fishing vessel that rescued them 10 years later was a sad irony.

Quite a story, almost enough to discourage me from the thought of transiting my trawler to Europe via Greenland. It's on my bucket list however.

Interestingly enough I most likely saw the Sheila Yeates a couple of times since I was in New York Harbor on my own boats for both OpSail '76 and the Statue of Liberty celebration in '86.

Re: The Last Voyage of the Sheila Yeates

Wow, what a blast from the past, I knew Geoff and the Sheila Yeates back in the day. The boat hauled out for the winters at Spirt Lake Marina and a crew of volunteers would work on her in the spring getting ready for a season of charter north of the border, I don't think she chartered in us waters because of the jones act. I never did sail on her though but still see a few of her old Lake Superior crew ocaisionally. I think it was on her second trip to Greenland when she was lost.

Re: The Last Voyage of the Sheila Yeates

Another interesting facet of this well-written piece is the lesson for Atlantic passages on the Northern route to stay at least 100 miles south of Cape Farvel--the southern tip of Greenland due to the limits of the pack ice and the currents that exist in that area. Unfortunately, the Shiela Yates was only 50 miles offshore when she became ice-bound and the result was inevitable. Kudos to the brave fishermen who risked their own lives to save the lives of the crew. Good luck and good sailing.

Re: The Last Voyage of the Sheila Yeates

Here's a great video of the ice conditions that are similar to those that exist off Cap Farvel, Greenland. Good luck and safe sailing.
