I finally managed to climb up the trailer to go after the winch. I disassembled it up there. Still not sure if they are machine screws or not as I could get them to budge so the base of the winch and the winch pad are still attached. /sigh Two cleats attached to the mast I would like to get down and clean up but again couldn't make the screws budge.
I hate complaining about the wind. It would be awesome to be out on the water. perfect for working on my skills. but it scares the !@#$ out of me 12 feet up on the trailer.

There's nothing OCD about cleaning/greasing winches. Most of us consider it a yearly maintenance item, even if we don't get around to it every single year.
It has some sort of pad. Honestly I wasn't sure it looked like wood as much as some type of dark polymer.
