I know Im confused?? ya have to climb the mast to get to the winch ?? seems sorta like your talking about something else up the mast ?? Ive seen some mounted at shoulder hight, (im6ft2) but never had to climb to get to one !! I pic sure would help !!

AH! that makes a big difference, fall off of that you hit something hard, not the water. You could try google and see what you can find on the boat/winch. Perhaps there is a loyal following, complete with a support group for all the "special" parts of this boat.

Hi,
There is no reason to completely remove the winch from the mast other than refinishing the mast. To take it apart, there will either be a allen or screw where you put the winch handle or there will be a spring clip arround the edge of the center part that turns with a winch handle. you just feel the surface and hool you fingernail on the clip and pill out slightly and up and it will spirell off the winch. lift the drum off and watch for the springs and dogs so as not to lose them. I general put a clear plastic bag over the winch and hold it close to the mast and pull the drum into it along with the lower dog s and springs and the bearrings as well. Clean the winch housing with regular paint thinner after removing excess grease with a paper towel. Clean the other parts in the cockpit and repack grease on bearings, install lower dogs and springs and install upper dog and springs, put drum on and use knife to close upp dogs sd spinning slowly and it drops in place! Finish putting rest of hardware on and you jave completed one winch. Eakes about an hour per winch to do it right.

My top tip as you go along is to ask self "do I really need to do this job" and if the answer is simply "I would like to" then drop it behind the list of things that are needed............cash and enthusiasm (aka will to live!) both have limits - spend what you have of both wisely .[/QUOTE]

Great advice David thank you. first of all *blush* it prompted me to start a list. Perhaps had I done that sooner I would be much farther along than I am now.

Careful...lists are like rabbits... You start out with a couple, say the "have too" list and the "want to" lists. Takes no time for that to be 4 lists, split into "really" and "kinda"...then another "wife wants"...then stuff to buy online....then etc etc...you hey the idea. I have 11 lists right now. Ugh

Yes. lists tend to grow - both in number and length.......
you will also notice that each item on the list will likely generate it's own "to do" list (as you break the task down into steps, which get spread over time - days, weeks, months?!).

One of the "Tricks" is to put a few easy (and ideally also nice!) things on the list - simply for the joy of crossing something out

When you get enough lists ya get to call it a Plan .

That would be great Stevieb7. Do you have a picture of her? Is yours seaworthy? I have read/heard good things about our boats. Especially for a noob like me. Sturdy is the most common adjective I hear thrown around

Are you certain the halyard winch has a wooden winch pad? It makes sense for the two primaries to have a pad, but not for the halyard winch.

There's nothing OCD about cleaning/greasing winches. Most of us consider it a yearly maintenance item, even if we don't get around to it every single year.
