Re: Professional therapy, motivational coach, or CF?

A friend of mine told me how his dad sailed around the world single handed with very little money and no income. He learned how to wrap a boat's wheel in leather, and when he pulled into a port offered to wrap people's wheels. He supported himself this way, and kept on sailing around the world.
I have been thinking of ways to make a living while sailing. I would love to get back onto the ocean but wrestling with the issues all being discussed here. My plan was to live in the Caribbean. But as was stated, it is very expensive now. I sold my catamaran, but I am again ready to find a way to get back to sailing. So far, I have a trip to help deliver a new cat from france to BVI in November. That should scratch my itch for a little while.

Yes, it definitely looks like a great place to live and sail.... NOT!

I also know first hand of a solo woman sailor who was attacked off Eastern Panama, who narrowly escaped by shooting and killing two of her attackers.

Yes, definitely a cruising paradise.
Ahahahahahahaahaaaaa.....
Pirate attack.. what a load of bollocks.. if it was a pirate attack you'd not be watching his video.. you'd be reading about a boat overdue.. boosts his viewing figures though..
As for E Panama.. you could get to take your guns... WooHooo...!!!
Invest in some corks.. they reduce the 'Pucker Factor'..

If the woman I know on this forum chimes in regarding her attackers and experience with the legal system down there.... You won't be laughing. In fact..... you'd be ashamed of what you wrote.

Re: Professional therapy, motivational coach, or CF?

Why would I be on the EASTERN side of Panama anyway?? That's not where to retire as an Ex Pat. Get a grip, Kenomac. Perhaps you've caught something on that Eastern Side and you need some DSM-V work on thyself.

Ooooh I remember these losers! Weren't they that upper middle class entitled couple from Europe who do Yoga and are pretentious in their Hedo lyfestyle semi-porn vanity blog production, always exagerating their accomplishments. If you look very closely in that video, I see no calluses on anyone's hands, only handcreme and tan lines. Tsk Tsk

No, totally wrong. The fellow is an Australian oil rig worker who purchased a used Beneteau in Greece then learned to sail. The gal was working in a scuba shop when they met in Greece.

Just a couple making ends meet the hard way by spending loads of time making excellent videos and travel blogs. The best sailing videos available.

Re: Professional therapy, motivational coach, or CF?

I think we as a community might be giving too much attention to the top 5% and bottom 5% of the community. The top 5% are extremely fortunate and they live in circumstances that few can achieve with a 20 year plan. The bottom 5% of the community achieve their objectives without the financial resources to contribute to the industry and rely on the goodness of fellow sailors and the marine industry. There's nothing wrong with either - but the majority of us are somewhere in the middle.

You don't have to be the top 5%, or the bottom 5% to sail.

The opportunity to sail depends on your resources & time. If you're working until you're 65, you may have resources but you will have limited time as you get older (unless you're willing to go for broke and potentially die a lonely death on the seas after 7 years). Too many people become infatuated with the idea of "circumnavigation" - and that mission, being so resource intensive, becomes an eternal barrier to getting out to sail.

As for the recent YouTube youth generation that are able to get resources for videos and have an obvious fan club? More power to them - if they encourage more people to get out and sail, the better. I'm not sure why some are so elitist about their own perceived self-independence.

There is no 'wrong' nor 'right'. What is or was right for the Pardeys may or may not work for you. Time DOES NOT matter as they faced THEIR set of real and imagined limitations (a.k.a. fears) and you are facing yours.

You are not wrong and they were not right. Wrong or right are only points of view, not axioms.

Being one of those who 'went small, went now', I could say just the opposite of what the Pardeys claimed. I think 'going small, going now' is wrong, for most personality types, ban the bohemian type without aspirations other than seizing the day.

If you are the worryior type, you are clearly not the warrior type. Your worries will not dissolve if you go. Neither if you do not. You are the worrying type and that's that. I am one too. BTW

Does it bear on YOUR case? Again: NO. My decisions, my challenges and fears are not yours.

It is OK to hear everything but ultimately you want to hear YOUR OWN voice. This is your guide. And it may be difficult to hear your own voice while everyone around you is telling yo what you should or should not do, or what they would do 'if they were in your shoes'. IRRELEVANT.

In my book, your dilemma is of the plain banana flavour: should I go sailing now, or should I stay and keep on saving for retirement?

Well, if you want to retire, you should keep on saving. If you want to sail, you should get a boat and cast the lines.

Is it NOT this simple really? Are there really any other choices than doing or not doing?

'Do or do not, there is no trying'. We will often laugh down pieces of actual wisdom contained in comic books. As if art was not rooted in life.

You do not need therapies, coaches, nor CF advice. What you want is to hear your own voice. Whether you follow your call or not, you are still paying the bill of all your actions and inactions. Swallow it.

There is a price to sailing and there is a price to saving for retirement. Which one do you want to pay?

Making a decision is like getting a boat for a passage - strip down and reduce. Look at what is useful for your undertaking and what is just a heavy junk that will make your progress slow. Treat all advice and others' experiences in the same vein.

It is your life, not ours.

Find your own voice. It may be a very wee voice in a noisy room full of others' chatter.

Maybe you're thinking of SV Delo's. It hard to keep track of all the movie stars.
