Offshore Bound

Nice looking boat. I had seen a couple of guys on it on a regular basis. Always hard at work. They installed a new roller furler last week. I caught the owner taking a break last Friday. Introduced myself and invited him to a little shindig we were having on the T-head.

He declined, saying they were headed out with the tide after midnight for his first trip offshore. They missed the planned departure and cast off about 9 Saturday morning.

An hour after dark Sunday night I saw the boat approaching his slip and walked over to catch a line. Although I could not see a lot of obvious damage, they had lost the mast and rigging.

He said they had never made it offshore nor even used the sails. A chain plate ripped out of the deck and Katy bar the door.

It must have been a tough 2 days.

Looking for another pretty place to work on the boat.

Re: Offshore Bound

^^^^
Eloquent argument for ALWAYS shaking down new equipment....also eloquent argument for extensively sailing the boat prior to taking off on an offshore passage.
