Name that Diesel?

Hello!

I am a new liveaboard updating and working on a 42' Spencer sloop build in or near 1973.

Work is going well but I have been having a rough time itentifying the engine make and model.

Its a diesel, I assume built in the early 70's or late 60's. I was told it was probably an Isuzu by the previous owner, and that it might be a Perkins by a local mechanic.

Any info or solid guesses would be fantastic! Please see the attached image if you feel like having a go

I would love to be able to get a manuel for the engine but need to know what it is first :-)

Re: Name that Diesel?

The color and shape of the valve cover suggests Perkins......but that’s an awful photo to identify an engine by.

Get a few more photos, get intimate with it. Top,left&right, rear.....any numbers that may be on it.

Welcome aboard SarahBWander. I can't tell you for sure the engine make, I suspect Perkins too, but not sure. We have a member here named Newhaul who will know I bet, he had a Spencer 42. Where are you located? Congratulations on a great old classic Spencer!

Re: Name that Diesel?

That sure looks to me like a Perkins (I have a 4-108).
Without more pix it can be hard to be sure.

I suggest getting a 4-108 manual, which can be found online in various places with a simple search. In there you will find diagrams showing where ID info are engraved on the block.

Otherwise it can be hard as the Perkins was a basic block which could be configured in countless ways with scores of accessories. Depending on its use. Was in boats, small trucks, tractors, generators, etc etc.

gee throw the Newby under the bus .
In all reality I would concur at this point with several others that it looks like a 4-108 but I would need better pictures and which s42 ie name and hull number.
Also where are you located ?

Re: Name that Diesel?

The image is sideways, right? Also, is it possible it's mirrored left for right (selfie mode)? All Perkins engines I'm familiar with have the alternator on the starboard side (assuming the "front" of the engine is what we're looking at, i.e. looking aft) and the fuel injectors to port.

Could be a 4.236 instead of a 4.108. Also could be a 6.354 like mine-- the pic doesn't show how many cylinders there are, although I can't see more than four high pressure lines.

Where's the heat-exchanger? Perkins always seems to put their name on it.

I go by the water pump">raw water pump location. An aside trust me there isn't enough room for a 6 cylinder anything in that engine space.

Perkins without a doubt. As to the model, need better pics.

Re: Name that Diesel?

Leaning more towards a Ford, but still not quite right, could be an earlier 2000 model. Doesn't look like Perkins, 3 cylinder (assuming seeing only 3 HP lines) but the inj. pump, injectors are all on the wrong side along with the oil fill on the timing cover. Definitely not a 4108, 4236. Could be one of the Perkins - xxxxx partnerships from over the years, but more likely an old tractor engine re-purposed.

Most likely an Isuzu C240 or close variant. Compare the front covers in the picture of a C240 from YouTube.

I do believe you got it.
One definite is that engine is not original to the boat.
