Re: Name that Diesel?

Jim nailed it at Isuzu
Thought I recognised the cluster wiring job
If the op would like I would be happy to help get Katrinka back into top shape.

Thank you very much! It's been an enjoyable challenge getting to know the boat better and updating her.

I'm in the Puget Sound, Washington State

You, my friend have an amazing memory!

Or was the wiring that distinctive? I've certainly spent hours chasing wires around :-)

Did you work on Katrinka (re-naming to Lark) before? I would love some advice! My Dad and I are sorting things out on fly with each project we take on. We're getting there but there are alot of Quirks to figure out.

Most likely an Isuzu C240 or close variant. Compare the front covers in the picture of a C240 from YouTube.

Thank you so much for your research! That's a great find and a tremendous help

no I have not set foot on her myself but you have been on my Spencer . Hull#7 the SV La Ruina . Nick Richards is buying her.
Nick showed me a few videos he shot.

Is katrinka still in the marina she was in when you purchased her? No need to name it .

Re: Name that Diesel?

A bit more information, if you're new to the diesel-engine-marinization-saga.

The engine is certainly an Isuzu, either a C240 or possibly a C190 or C223.
These engines have been around a long time, at least since 1980 and probably earlier. The 240 is very common, used in lots of machinery; internal engine parts are widely available.

The problem you have now is identifying the marinizer. Isuzu both marinized their own engines and sold them to other companies for marinization; it your engine doesn't say Isuzu on it somewhere, it was likely (but not necessarily) marinized by a specialist (i.e. Westerbeke, Beta, Nanni, Mercruiser, etc...) or even an individual using off the shelf components.

The presence of pipe fittings would tend to lend credence to a 'self-mariinization' hypothesis, though it could also just be standard jake-leg improvisation after-the-fact.

To identify the actual base Isuzu engine, if there is no tag on the engine, there will be a number cast into the block, behind the alternator, just aft of the front mounting bracket, something like 4L201. A call to a good Isuzu engine dealer or distributor should give you the answer.

As for the actual marinizer, Pisces is one, I saw a picture with the name "Tobin" cast into the manifold (but could find nothing on them), there are certainly others.

However, if you have no problems with the marinizing parts now, with proper maintenance (and a little luck), they should last a long time. Starters, alternators and raw water pumps are all ancillary, and can be purchased from a wide variety of alternative sources when they wear out; that leaves pretty much just the heat exchanger, so take care of it!

If that is an oil bath aircleaner shown in your picture, I'd guess that the engine is original to the boat...

Re: Name that Diesel?

Thank you everyone! I'm attaching the new pictures I got in case this helps further but it seems like we've got it just about sorted.

I can't tell you how much of a releif it is to have the options down to such a short list!

I apologize for the poor quality of photo, there really isnt any room to get an image of the sides and the back is pretty crampt to approach.

The second to last image is of a Kiki injector and its ID plate which apparently both Isuszu and Perkins used standard at different times from what the internet tells me.

Thanks again!

Hello Neighbor!

I haven't been on your boat to my knowledge, you might be thinking of Willy the previous owner? He sold me the boat just this Fall. Still in the same marina.

Would love to hear your thoughts about the old girl, Dad (Jeff) and I (Sarah) are around more often then not working on her lately and it would be great to meet you!
