Seems someone here always has seen, done, experienced anything you have bigger and better.

Any sailing related challenges?

I'll start.

I bet you never..... have been squidded.

Explanation: After two days cleaning my topsides I felt good that my sailboat was looking good. Upon returning the next night I discovered a fresh patch of ink running down the aft stairwell. At first I thought someone tossed a squid.

However, recently flying squid reports were confirmed on camera.

Never squidded but have been seagulled.

I had done the 8-midnight watch and was asleep in the aft cabin when crew called me on deck about 3 am. Said he had heard a loud noise like a twang or clang or metallic clank. Got lights and started checking everything I could think of: all the standing rigging was good, steering gear, engine and drive train, hoses, thru-hulls. Could find nothing wrong so after an hour or so decided to go back to sleep but left instructions to wake me immediately if anything else occurred.

Went below, laid down and was almost asleep. Rolled over to get more comfortable and my hand touch something.... something that felt..... warm and fuzzy and......... RAT!!!! Reflex slapped at it and leapt out of the cabin like I was fired out in an ejector seat. After I calmed down a bit decided I better go do battle and reclaim my cabin. Cautiously reached in to turn on a light and saw a very dazed seagull perched on the bunk.

We figured he hit the rigging flying in the dark, hence the loud twang sound, was knocked loopy and flopped down into my cabin to recuperate but instead he was flung across the cabin by me. Set him on the back deck and after a couple of hours he flew off.

Okay now the point is to rebut with something more unusual or bigger etc.


Guessing a rat that turned out to be a bird? How tame.

Well I guessed it was a dog. Boy was I mad. Who could have boarded my boat while I was away, brought their pet dog, and let it crap on my boat?

The answer came 24 hrs later when I spotted the monkey high in the mast of the adjoining vessel.

we once ,off the coast of Columbia got bombarded by flying fish for about an hour!

during the bombardment we collected about 10kg of flying fish!

these got filleted and fried till we,crew of 8 could eat no more!
the rest we froze...........they must have been spawning or something

that's nothing... I got crabs once... we lived like kings for a month.....

I don't think I expressed myself well there... oh well..



Off topic...There used to be a pub - rather rough - in Southampton called the 'Juniper Berry' which had a big wall mural in the public bar.... writ large on it was 'its no use standing on the seat... the crabs in here can jump ten feet...'

Well if it unexpected boardings the sailboat that had a whale land on it would win the challenge.

However, food must certainly go to El Pinguino.

Let me tell you about a really really big wave I saw once.....

I bet you never pumped fresh water, diesel fuel, then saltwater from the same bilge in a three day period.

Background: After a long time on the hard:

The first day in the water a bilge inspection discovered a fresh water line leak

The second day we discovered one of new fuel lines wasn't tight.

The third day we found someone forgot to turn off the raw water valve to the engine.

I was nervous the fourth day I looked.
(Bone dry now 4 years)

Size? A dangerous challenge to play with a big trimaran.

I bet you never had to have 5 monohulls relocated in the marina so you could squeeze in.

After setting a new mast a monohull owner came over to say it was so funny to watch me use a level. He said, don't you know these waves rock a sailboat. I didn't say anything.

Hey, isn't a seagull (or a rat) bigger than a squid?

Tame? How would you like to wake up with a gigantic, plague carrying, ferocious, attack rat in the bed with you?

Even if it was a bird, those seagulls have sharp beaks and they'll eat anything. I was lucky he was dazed from the impact or he might have taken a couple of fingers. As it was, I almost left a monkey present on the bunk when I found the critter.

A few weeks ago we went out to our boat and Mr. cthoops found a raccoon in the lazarette. We're on a mooring.


We were hip towed to the t-dock where an animal control officer came to try to remove him. After 20 minutes, Mr. cthoops moved a line attached to a fender which gave the raccoon just enough room to slide down the outboard shaft and back into the water. They swim just like a dog. Who knew?

Living aboard our Alberg 30 in Vancouver years ago we almost always slept with the forward hatch open. Usually wide open in the summer. Well, I woke up one morning and started howling when I saw my wife pretty much covered in bird dropping. That woke her up and she started laughing too, seems I was covered as well. It seems the marina resident heron must have used our open hatch for target practice. We blame the heron because there's no way a seagull can do that much damage. Great shot too, he absolutely nailed the opening and barely got any on the deck.

18 months ago, sailing from Finike, Turkey to Herzlia, Israel we experienced flying squids attack. Some thirty-forty small squids (maybe two-three inch each) flew over the boat and collided with the helm station (it is raised on the Lagoon) or fell on the deck. It took rather a concerted effort to flush the boat clean. As it happened at night we did not see them - I suspect that the squids were running from some predator.

How about getting hit in the face with a large flying fish, then having it go down the front of your T shirt. All at 4:30 am when you are trying very hard to keep your eyes open!
