Knew a guy once that spent a week in jail in Jamaica. He had to fight the roaches for the little food he was given, rats walked on him at night while he was sleeping and at high tide there was water in one end of the cell.

I wonder why no one has recommended...

1 Become an attractive 20-something with an attractive mate
2 Make cool videos and become popular on YouTube
3 Patreon, baby, Patreon.

Learn one of these skills, and you will be busy for sure. If you don't want to learn a skill, you can do oil changes, sand bottoms, clean bilges, etc. Making money is merely convincing someone to give you theirs. The easiest way of doing that is to be their bitch, and do the hard work they don't want to do for themselves. It may come as a shock to some CF members, but some people in big boats have buckets of money to spread around. Sadly, I am not one of those people.

All of which will likely be violating visa permits in all but you home country.

6 yrs ago I got into FX Trading and it has provided me with considerable income and losses as well but it has given enough income to sail all yr round , but I was also fortunate that I sold my House in uk and was able to purchase 2 villas which are Now rented at 65% of the calendar yr if you want to sail full time you must firstly set up some thing that is going provide you with a consistent income ie Property or internet Based get it up running first before you pack the day job in then once you have established a business platform that provides income no matter where you are then follow your dreams

Some people have written articles to magazines and newspapers. Nice pictures will help.

Writing novels is of course possible too, if you are skilled enough.

But the OP has stated he doesn't believe in intellectual property rights. So anything like books, music, software, etc is free for all and cannot be sold.

Re: How do you earn an income cruising full time?

Magazine articles rarely pay more than a couple of hundred dollars (at most). While a nice supplement, I wouldn't put it in the category of "earning an income".

Having rental properties, playing FX markets, etc are all income producing, but gets into Ann's post about already having money to earn money.

Yeah, the OP not only wants to earn a living, he even wants to build up some reserve. Frankly, I have never heard of anyone managing to do that, while cruising the world. Cover some (not all, but some) of the expenses, yes, people do that. Cover everything and then some, though? Without some sort of outside investments to begin with? That's a whole different matter.

Agreed. Let's look at that theoretical $500 a month figure...

Lets assume that for every month you work you want to get two months of freedom. This means you need to make $1500 a month (current expenses for a month plus two months).

Lets also assume you can only find "close to minimum" wage jobs @ $10 an hour cause you don't have a degree or skills that pay a lot.

You would have to work all 4 weeks a month to make that $1500. If you wanted months of freedom you would have to work for 3 months.

Now, let's assume a more realistic sum of $1500 a month.

The math doesn't work with the available jobs and without having a higher education or higher skill. At that $1500 a month and keeping the "two months" of freedom assumption you would need to be making between $25 and $27 an hour 40 hours a week - not including taxes. That's a full time job making about 56K a year! I doubt there are any non-IT non-grad skills that pay 56K a year and if they do exist they are not abundant.

I have to agree with you.

Maybe the secret is to learn these skills to use on our own boats, so that we can KEEP our earned $$$ and make them last a long long time while cruising.

Re: How do you earn an income cruising full time?

A bit lucky, I bought a place out in the wilds for peanuts 35 years ago (cash, no mortgage), and it has gone up in value stupidly since then. Off grid, 1,000 ft up, was in the middle of a forest (now harvested, views are fantastic).

Plus from January will be on pension (3 pensions from then if I want, though there are very big compensation claims about to be unleashed on two of them for mis selling, so will hang in for those to kick in).

Something small enough and cheap to maintain, and large enough to be comfy and safe, will do me to live aboard and see me out.

If you can't afford to live on a 40ft, don't buy one, if you can't afford to live on a 30ft, don't buy one, if you can't afford to live on an International Folkboat, give up the dream and look for another?

Heck we all have dreams go pear shaped on us. I fully expected to be the skipper of a Star Cruiser by now, but technological advance and the destruction of Market forces, has faded that option unexpectedly. *grins*
