Hum. For me, I do work for clients via upwork/odesk without a previous working relationship. I don't bid on projects at all. I do have a bitchingly good resume that allows companies to contact me to work on their projects. The ones I'm working for stopped going the low bid path as quality was not there. But that's with building system design, HVAC, plumbing, fire, etc.

Though I suspect in IT coding, its probably tons more competitive. So I can see where that would be challenging.

The problem with app development is that for any type of app there are tons of competition, all competing for the end users dollar. At $10 ish a pop, it's going to be hard to make an app you can live off of.

I sold several hydraulic analysis software programs back in the 90's that I wrote and developed in my spare time (written in C++). I sold a few copies (50-100 ish) but it was not enough to live on. Mind you the market was pretty small.

Software development like writing books, can make money. But for 100,000's doing it, few make enough to live on. App's and books get buried in the heap. How many apps on your phone / computer were written by a single person. I'm betting not very many.

Yes you can make money writing apps, but will it be enough to live on month to month.

Doing your own work on the boat consumes considerable time that could be spent earning an income. An important tradeoff to consider.

Cruising costs money. I cant think of any exceptions. You either need to already have an income or start with funds and burn them down.

I can think of one couple in San Francisco and who Airbnb their apartments to fund their boat purchase. Their occupancy is near 100%.

The catch is they can only airbnb while residing in their apartment. So extended cruising is out.

Another couple in New York are funding their cruising the same way. (I cant remember which podcast I heard that in)

Well I've known devs who make $17k/mo off one stupid app that took all of a Saturday to make and I've seen apps developed by companies for a substantial amount of money and time abandoned 6 months after their release. It all really depends on the app, target audience demographics and competition to name a few.

Smartphone penetration is now at 75% of mobile subscribers in the US, that's roughly 225MM phones (not to mention US tablets or other countries numbers). If you could get 1/1000th of 1% of the US smartphones to buy your app. That's roughly $1500 for 1 app's installs (@ .99 cents). What if you had 10 apps in the marketplace(s) reaching only a fraction of that? What if they were ad supported, have in-app purchases?

You may be surprised how many people with pay .99 cents for an app, even if they will only use it once.

I'm not saying it's easy (was that a requirement?), and you need to come up with quality app ideas (or improve on others). Stay away from niche markets (I've made this mistake; Scuba), prepare to fail with most of your ideas. But just one [decent, brilliant, lucky or completely stupid] idea could be a great source of income for a cruiser and keep the kitty full. Also you aren't competing directly with 100,000s of devs, only the ones with a competing app. Whereas if you are looking for Freelance/contractor/remote/telecommute work, you are competing against the masses even with a "bitchingly good resume" and still doing work for someone else, presumably on their timetable, not your cruising schedule.

My .02 cents. YMMV.

You can have a company ashore that will generate income as you go.

You can have assets that will generated income as you go.

You can find a new love in every port and then sail away with them till their credit card lasts.

Etc.

MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT
  • constant internet access not required
  • 100% offline development is possible (depending on your apps functionalities)
  • no boss
  • no clients or trying to drum up business (app promotion notwithstanding)
  • no billing/collections/BS
  • recurring income stream (app sales/in-app purchases/ads)
  • no formal education necessary
  • live and work where and when you want

Of course you would need to come up with an idea (or 10+)

Wouldn't work for the OP since he's anti intellectual property, but let's all agree, that's just crazy talk, within the context of this thread.
That's exactly what I have been putting some serious thought into.

Any financial trading can only be done while you are in a place that gives you access to the relevant market. It is also vastly occupying (deduct all trading time from your cruising time and you are likely not cruising). It also requires sharp skills, knowledge and infrastructure.

Good choice for an ex banking sector specialist, but then again why would an ex banking sector specialist have to work at all?

Cheers,

Design and development can be done while cruising. This applies to broad range of skills like clothing, architecture, appliances, etc. Additionally by visiting various parts of the world you have immediate access to places where particular parts of the project can be outsourced, subcontracted or manufactured at prices that can't be beaten at home.

Re: How do you earn an income cruising full time?

Interesting topic. I wonder if there is any one here who does academic research professionally? I'm doing my PhD at the moment and once I have all my data, the last year or so will be used to just write things up + utilizing secondary sources available online. Have been toying with the idea that it's possible to do this on the boat in a nicer climate, provided I get financing for the rest of the project. The grants are obviously not big, but we have some passive income as well. The distractions while cruising could be a killer for actually ever graduating .

You know, I have a gut feeling that you may just have a Ranch, the size of which would put a few Texas Ranch's to shame.
Am I correct?

Re: How do you earn an income cruising full time?

I did it the old fashioned way, worked my Butt off for the man forever, got a Retirement and put some money back.
Met with my financial adviser yesterday with my wife as she is the one who is nervous about all of this, and his numbers show that with a 5% return I have enough money to get us through essentially forever.
She is still nervous about us Retiring, I believe I have passed the finish line, why continue in the rat race?
I'm tired of working for the man, especially when he is a fool.

A64 pilot, congrats! That is definitely a race worth winning. I'm running the same course, and while I can't quite see the finish line, I do know where it is and it's nice to hear about people crossing it.
About the man being a fool, I learnt many years ago that I don't deal well with idiot bosses:-). I had to start my own company so I could at least tolerate the boss.
