Challenge: What Movie Sailboat Is that ?
Does anyone know what sailboat is shown at the very end of the movie Failure to Launch (2006)? The movie had Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker sailing the boat.
It looks somewhat like an Alden but what really caught my eye was the horizontal wooden wheel in the cockpit. Never seen one before. It appears to be a 36ft to 40ft sloop.
I have googled this to death for 2 years and cant find anything on it.
Thanks,
Ray

Ray there is a ketch almost exactly like it (including the wheel) in a marina in Seattle. I looked through the boat, almost everything new in 05...Maybe it was the boat. Seems like it was made in Taiwan. It is on yachtworld, just do an advanced search of all cruisers 35-50 feet for sale in Seattle. You'll find it there.

BTW, did you notice all the errors in the first sailing scene with that 70 foot center cockpit sloop? When she is at the helm and the scene is showing her face, they are on port. Then when they show him in the companionway, starboard. They flip back and forth over and over, switching tacks each time! And the knotmeter shows 0 knots.
And, during his jibe, he ends up with the jib back winded!

I noticed all that too. Funny in the movie's how fast the boats go when there is no wind or waves in the water.....Can you say MOTORING.....lol.
Well I am sure the non sailors think its great.

yeah, and did you notice how at the end when he got knocked in the water, she dropped the mizzen, but left the main and jib up and trimmed, yet the boat stopped on a dime!
Movies generally do pretty well to research the things they are involved in such to make them appear realistic and not distract the audience with errors. How about a sailing consultant?

I had to turn it off. Showed them sailing away with the motor running, and no breeze. Then the always the showman Geraldo lifting weights talking about staying in shape. He was meeting the boat in ports, and didn't actually do the circumnavigation himself. His boat, and crew did. Kind of like the excavation in Chicago....LOLOLOLOL

I have to confess to not having seen the move, but I'm willing to bet that the sailing depictions are probably the most accurate (i.e. true to life) parts.
I'd like to know what sailboat was in the "Talented Mr Ripley" movie. That one had nice classic lines. Very tasteful, as I remember.

Newt,
Thanks I will try to find it.
Geraldo's boat is a 72ft aluminum ketch behemoth. Apparently he still has it.
This is a quote from a review of his trip.
"Geraldo has conducted the trip on intermittent weekend and longer breaks from CNBC and NBC as his crew sometimes waited for him and sometimes sailed on to another port to await his joining them for a leg of the trip."
I think I could that.

I don't know... Geraldo's sailing sounds (to me) much like the yuppies who pay someone to drag them up and down Mount Everest, than compare themselves to Sir Edmund Hillary.

anotherT34C,
I was told by my phone-a-friend that the Talented Mr Ripley sailboat is a Hinckley. Looks about 40ft. That would explain the classic lines.

Yes, T34C, I agree it sounds that way, but as is true so often, there's more to the story than appears to be the case at first blush.
Below, I'll post a link to a story that Soundings did on Rivera in March of 2007. If you have the time, I think you'll find it both interesting and informative. Here's the link:
