Duct tape and bailing wire Shruggs what more does a man need. Oh and i agree bring a few trinkets for the ladies and kids we find beads (no one laugh) work great. Hook up with the head man do a lil manual labor and trade some goods... I prefer not to use to many "high dollar items" knives and what not I use them very sparingly you do not want to look like the "rich american"

Re: What Do You Bring to Trade Later when You Go Cruising ?

I think keeping a little stash of different bits and pieces is good - variety is the key.

Things like sweets/chocolates (especially the larger variety packs that you can get in Eurpoe or USA) go down a treat (no pun intended) with most people.

Also try keeping a stash of toiletries - shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste etc, it is surprising how well these go down in certain areas (S America/Cuba etc)

As for the rest i'd agree with svWindfall for most of the items... really good list guys!

Batteries. Lots of batteries, the more remote the island, the better they will be received. AAA, AA, & Ds. AAs being the most widely accepted.

We brought fish hooks, guitar strings and reading glasses and they were very well received in the South Pacific and islands in the Indian Ocean
