If I was going to sail around the world without navigational instruments, the first thing I would do is purchase a steel hulled sailboat with a really thick hull.

Yup...
GPS 4 times a day max..
VHF... only if its a Mayday or directed at me...
Radar AIS... thats big boat stuff innit....

We always logged lat/long, average SOG, etc. every two hours on passages, at the end of the watch. The helmsman would look at the GPS every now and then to correct cross track error.
