pirate Challenge: Kung ** Kruisers vs Pirate Locals

The way of the warrior is many varied. Grasshoppers

and sometimes the road ends in a Bangkok Hotel room cupboard

I'm buying a DVD box set - and will use 'em as throwing discs against Pirates / Locals / the UKBA ....once I have sharpened the edges

But always open to new ideas, so would be interested to hear any other strategies - from recent threads seems to be a few thoughts floating around. Often involving waving oversized testicles

Some funny related stories would not go amiss either..........

(BTW this is not a(nother) gun thread. no sirreee this is strategy discussions. higher level stuff just might involve stuff.............).

This is what I'm thinking right now. Just like in my home, sound and light is what's going to scare away a burgler MOST of the time. Easy to install and very cheap. We had someone try to rob us while we had dinner in Orient Bay three weeks ago. Luckily I saw them shine the boat with a light from shore and we rushed back, and they rushed away.

definitely interested to hear what sort of thoughts people have. Unfortunately my home protection, my great dane, won't be going to sea, though it would be funny to see a burglars face as he came storming up the steps, it would be worth washing the brown stains from the cockpit
I have heard of alarms, tacks on the swim platform, and having a special companionway hatch made with steel bars on it to keep people out. Always curious what people do to help them sleep better in unfamiliar anchorages.

There are some advantages to simply locking yourself below until the thieves/pirates leave. Chief among them is the fact that a good lock is not a restricted or prohibited weapon in any country.

If that's a bit too passive, there's also the option of carrying a spray- mace, pepper spray, bear repellant, etc. The danger with sprays, of course, is that unless you wear eye protection, everyone is going to be incapacitated. Trust me.

Remember the scene in the Indiana Jones movie where the big bad Arab Does the sword waving thing and Indiana whips out his revolver and shoots him? Nuff said.

Ok, have to get back to work, but random trivia on that movie scene. Harrison Ford was terribly sick that day and it was supposed to be a big fight scene, but he was too sick and so they came up with that last minute.......and the rest is history

Set off your e-pirb and push the dsc button on your vhf. Won't scare them off but it would at least alert someone that something bad was happening.

Motion sensor or hatch switch that sets off a recording of a pit bull barking and growling. Buddy boat in Mexico rigged this up years ago... scared the hell out of me when I dropped by for a visit one evening... very little translation needed... CP

Wile E. Coyote Style

I say, a spring-loaded boom cocked to starboard with a trip line to release it. Headaches for all in the cockpit.

except for locks, a dog onboard or better on deck is probably the best/easiest/most legal theft protections there is...

I think this has potential:

Just needs a bigger ball - remember 'The Prisoner' TV series?

I have been thinking over this again recently... and searched the web for new ideas.

I think the 1st line should be an electronic alarm and deterrent system. Detect the person(s) boarding you and use a very loud (multiple sirens) alarm coupled with very intens high speed strobe lights aimed at their face. Research indicates that this could result in epileptic seizures and some countries made this illegal.

I wouldn't mind a system where a pushbutton remotely triggers some teargas canisters that put a cloud of gas around the boat. Alarm systems offered in South Africa already have this option (with automatic activation even).

2nd line is still delaying entry, i.e. the steel bars blocking the companionway.

3rd line is too controversial to discuss here

ciao!
Nick.
