I sent e-mail to Raymarine, Garmin and Furuno asking about using radar to alert cruisers to approaching danger. I don't know a lot about these things but from what I got back, I think only Furuno has the ability to automatically select safety zones and alert you when something enters them. It doesn't matter what angle the other vessel is on, as long as it's in that preselected zone, an alarm will go off so you won't know if it's incoming or just crossing in the same anchorage as you're in. Ray and Garmin seemed to indicate you have to manually select targets and then follow them so that's not much help.

This seems pretty primitive. I've done a lot of flying and been in several planes with radar that would alert you to any other aircraft in the area. The newer equipment even knows the various altitudes of all the aircraft in your area. Maybe we need to campaign these companies to include this feature in their new models.

funny thing,in 25 years of cruising,100 000 sea miles and visiting 90 countries have only ever had 3 things stolen,a sail off the deck whilst we were asleep in mombassa harbour,an out board off the dingy in gambia that we should have lifted,and a camera also in gambia by the guy who we had paid to watch the boat!!!!!

i never lock the yacht on anchor and rarely in a marina,though do leave the stereo on and a light.

JRC has this capability. I have a JRC 1500MkII.

Do you feel comfortable that this allows for some measure of security? How far out can you set your perimeter? Does it pick up small things like inflatables, jet skis, swimmers? What kind of alarms can you set for it? Can it be set up to turn on lights, etc?

billgow, a radar sees anything that reflects its signal. I doubt a swimmer would be visible on the radar.

I never had to use the feature while at anchor because so far I only cruised in the US. But I use it as an alarm when travelling at night just in case the person on watch is dozing off.

As for the rest of the questions, ask the people at JRC America, they are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Spearguns are legal almost everywhere.
Being inside a wheelhouse, while using one , gives you a huge advantage. Aluminium hatches, locked form inside, are several hours work with serious tools to break into.
If you light your cutting torch adjust it properly, then brush the flame out over a piece of steel, then fill a plastic bottle with the mix , you have a bottle full of very loud explosive . Tie this to the back stay with a thin wire inside connected to an extension cord led below. Touch the ends of this cord on your battery and you will have only brown stuff left in your cockpit.
Running electricity thru seawater breaks it down into hydrogen and oxygen mix , just as loud.
If you wrap some foot long, 3/4 inch sch 40 plastic pipes with brown shopping bag paper , tuck the ends in, varnish them, tape them in a bundle with wires hanging out, tape the works to a stick, then push them thru a port when pirates board , they are not going to stick around to see if the powder is real. Again, only brown stuff left in your cockpit.

I’m sorta surprised no one has talked about wasp or hornet spry. It will ruin their day and it has about 20 ft of spray. Better than pepper spray legal and easy to use

I had never thought of that, wasp spray.........sounds like a great idea and that stuff definitely has distance to it

thank you newt my sentiments entirely,allways had lots of rifles and shot guns on board but these were primarily for hunting wild goats and game.

my biggest fear would have been to shoot an innocent fisherman or boat boy fueled by western paronoia of black people.

in my experiance of the 3rld world genarally crime is of the minor or petty theft variety.

have allways found that if you are in an unsafe area,generally you will have some some law abiding godfearing local person of a morally correct disposition will come up to me/us and either warn us or offer to escort us to a safer area.

many times ive been invited into peoples homes,villages etc
generally people are intrinsically good.

but have seen many times people get into very bad situations because they are paranoid.

Power draw would be a pretty big consideration.

met a un aid advisor at dar es salaam yachtclub a few years back told us this great story about his former boss whilst he was working in kenya.
apparently this guy had had 2 4x4 land cruisers stolen at gunpoint in down town nairobi over a period of a year.
anyway recieved his third brand new paid for by the west united nations vehicle, this time thought he would get his own back in case he got car jacked again.
bottle of johhy walker left in the glove compartment,with a few drops of cyanide that he had got from a friend in the mining industry.
cut along story short couple of months later he was duly car jacked,beaten up and car stolen.

a few days later the nairobi herald ran a story"THREE DEAD POLICE OFFICERS FOUND IN STOLEN CAR"
the guy decided to teriminate his contract with the un and was looking for a yacht to go sailing on was the last we heard.

moral:give them enough rope......................
