Challenge: Google Earth Ranges

I lost a screw mooring, and can’t remember the ranges I used to locate it 5 years ago. I got the bright idea of going back in time on Google Earth to see the boat on the mooring. I was able to get 3 clear pictures of it laying in different headings. That gave me a rough position for the mooring.

Google Earth’s Lat/Lon seem to have enough error, so using a handheld makes for too much ground to search (Zero Vis). I always have used ranges to locate such things with great accuracy, but that only works if you know where the mooring REALLY is when you take the sights.

I was able to use the measure function in GE to superimpose a line, but there has to be an easier way. The chart for this area really sux, so “real” charting programs are little use. Any Ideas?

Re: Google Earth Ranges?

A SCUBA tank. Looks like you have a fairly small search area.

6 hours of chain dragging and 2 of SCUBA... No Joy! We have found the same damn oyster shell over and over.... I need to refine the search area better

Re: Google Earth Ranges?

Old scuba trick if you know ABOUT where your object is and how far it sticks up from the floor of the. what you need is 20 lbs of weight and 100 foot of mason twine. You set the 20 lbs of weight on the floor of the river tie the line to the weight. you use your suba and move out 100 ft you then swim in a circle holding the line tight to the weight and close to the floor of the river. if you cross anything sticking up from the bottom of the river your line with snag and "it" will become the new pivot point and you will cross your own line. then you follow the line back to the new pivot point. Course now I don't know how far your screw sticks up. if it is only a few inches then well ... but if it sticks up 12" you could do it pretty easy. We was searching for lost cars. and what not worked realy well beats just mucking about on the bottom.
