i was about to send an email asking questions, but i thought their might be a story behind it?

I've actually gone to see this one , since it's close to my house, and extremely tempting, in a train wreck sort of way. The cabin sole is salvaged from a small town gymnasium floor (cool!), the workmanship seems very solid, it has a hand made wrought iron destroyer type steering wheel (awesome!), a sauna (cool!), and the masts are somewhere not close to the boat and may be highway lighting poles (interesting!). Another factor is that the marina is at the bottom of a very steep hill, and quoting the guy I talked to "Only way out of here for this gal, is by water". Did I mention it has never been in the water before ?

As I said, it's fascinating like a candle is to a moth..

That's a cool looking boat (IMO) and I'd love to see it up close. If one has the stamina to finish it, I suspect it would be a STEEL!!! (pun intended)

You are correct sir. im guessing it is a photo that was found so a buyer is able to see what the deck looks like.

I always thought that it was pretty cool...I can invision a grand companionway like the ones in some large Formosas,the exiting one is ok for the KISS approach tho..

Roberts 53, great boats, sail well, and motor well as long as you have 120 +hp, I would put a strong fence between the skeg and the keel. Skegs on Roberts boats have had issues in the past, make it strong now and you wont have problems later. Big boat would be around 28 + tonnes in cruising mode. Price isn't out of order, depending on the rig, telegraph poles you don't want. Rubbers on the ports are potentially risky, the glass / polycarbonate can be punched in by a reasonable sea. Good project boat.

Seem to remember the motor in there is a 50-60hp Ford Lehman. Remember thinking that seemed quite small, and it's interesting that 120hp might be what this boat should have.

I am actually serious. I went and looked at it, and every so often (like when someone vents about how fed up they are with working on their boat project) I wonder what it would take to finish it.

It's also been my "what if" boat. For example, what if you took out the 50hp , and put in a hybrid electric drive (like mbianka)? How many LiFePO cells would you need ?

1) Perhaps USD 200k plus some 10k work-hours. Less with skilled work-force, good tooling and sharp project management.

2) Someone said 120hp+ is the desired power. You may struggle to fit all the lifepoes and the required gensets inside. I would forego the batteries and build around the gensets; but if you need the gensets, then why not use a plain diesel engine drive?

1) That's fairly close to my own WAG a while ago, which is why I now own a 23' trailorsailor (see, someone actually listens to the advice about project boats, and starting small :-) )

2) At the time I was not thinking 120hp, but closer to the engine that is in there now. For living aboard, I also have a crazy weird electrical need that would have required a massive gen set anyway, if it is even possible. Right now that is a ways off..
