I don't now about the Caribbean but I was on a boat in the Bahamas with it and was quite impressed. Don't think the coverage extends to the Caribbean.

It is great in the Great Lakes, like having the Weather Channel on all the time.

Laying at anchor off st. Thomas right now. XM has not worked since I left the Bahamas.... Can not see the wx working if the radio will not come in.

Might be a good tool for coastal US.

Hank,
You're going to find the answers to your questions here, and a whole lot more than you probably wanted to know....;
(sorry about that!)

XM's marine weather is fairly limited in its coverage.....although it does of course, cover the Florida Keys (and Northern / Central Bahamas), there are MUCH better, MUCH wider coverage, and MUCH cheaper ways to "gert weather"....

1) In the Florida Keys and near Bahamas, you have the US NWS/NOAA weather radio transmitting 24/7 with accurate forecasts of the coastal and near offshore waters...for free...
And, as you venture further, you'll find MUCH better options, also for free....

Not sure what "islands" you're planning on sailing to (Bahamas, Caribbean, etc.), but whatever islands, below you'll find links to more weather related info/forecasts that you could imagine!!!

2) For a VERY detailed look at your offshore weather options....please read this thread....
SSCA Forum • View topic - Offshore / Hi-Seas Weather data / forecasts

3) For details about the limited coverage of XM marine weather, the wider coverage of Sirius marine weather, etc....please read these threads.....

I do hope this helps..

Fair winds...

Re: XM weather or what else

Assuming the XM weather fits your requierments look at the Garmin weather. Same data but you pay by the day not by the month. So the time the boat is not in use the clock is not ticking. Downside is no cel service no weather.
