Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

Xantrex Freedom Inverter/Charger

I guess it's a long shot, but I am wondering if anyone else has dealt with this. My charger on this is working fine, but with the inverter I receive a temperature warning and the unit stops inverting after some time. The fan that cools the unit when the inverter is running has stopped working. Temporarily I installed an external fan and leave it running when the inverter is on and that makes it work fine, but it's external and I have to turn it on..

The problem is, that fan doesn't appear to be easily replaceable. There appears to be no way to remove and replace it without doing major surgery. Why they didn't just make the fan replaceable is beyond me. It would be working fine if the fan would operate, but now I am thinking I have to replace the whole unit (Ching, Ching $1,300!)

Has anyone dealt with this, by chance?

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

G'day, Mate. I have a Freedom 25 on board. The bearing in the fan was starting to go and make a bit of noise during operation. I was able to remove the old fan and replace with a similar unit that I got from a computer supply shop. Back in business. It is doable. Cheers.

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

I've had the case open on my Freedom 25 and, while I don't specifically recall how the fan is mounted, I can't imagine that it would be real difficult to change it out. If it is prohibitively difficult you could always snip the wires to the existing fan and use them to drive a relay which in turn controlled an external cooling fan. That seems like a lot of bother c/w just changing out the fan

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

Well it sounds like you guys have dealt with it. I guess its possible to take it apart and get to the fan. It just doesn't look easy...I'll order a fan and give it a try.

Based on Dulcesuenos's comment above, I'd try taking it apart and checking the plug before ordering a new fan

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

Might be easy to get to at the very end of the unit without completly removing all the covers. Make sure the fan is connected fordt. If so jump 12v to the fan and see of it powers up, if it doesnt the fan is bad, if the fan works and the connection was good , the circuit board is bad, get a new charger...

That kind of thing never happens to me! But still, I'll hope it's the plug

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

Anyone had problems with the charging side on these? I have a freedom 25 and when I bought the boat it would invert fine but it was not charging. I took it in and had a board replaced. It worked for a few months now back to the same issue. The charge light comes on but no apparent output. It's frustrating since it cost me about $700 to get it "fixed".
Luckily I have a 40 amp backup charger and solar so the batteries are staying up.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Just to say that the supposedly unobtainable replacement fan for my 1500/70 inverter charger was in stock at Schneider...

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

Yes. Same charger, had the same issue a few years back. My recall is that the fan was secured with rivets that needed to be drilled out. Watch the aluminum shavings from the rivets !!!

I chose to buy the replacement fan from Xantrex to eliminate the "sorta the same" issues with fit and performance. Secured the new fan (which was in stock available to ship) from Lamplighter Marine. Mounted the new fan with screws and zip ties.

Worst part of the project was getting the charger/inverter out and back into the ultra-tight compartment where it is mounted.

Not a big project. Fear not.

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

The fan is probably a standard muffin fan. Probably available locally. The bearing, singular, goes but they ching long before failure.

Re: Xantrex Freedom 20 inverter/charger fan

Our experience with Xantrex chargers, on two sailboats and one Astronomy Trailer, is that they are throw-away units. The factory essentially laughed at us about repairs. They said "just buy a new one." So, we will, but not a Xantrex.
WRT the cooling fans, we had the same trouble, but we managed to replace the fans. We also learned that improving ventilation to the compartment helped a lot.

In the case of the 1500/70, the fan has a special heat sensor which feeds back to the logic; it's not a garden variety fan in our case...

Skip,
How/where did you find the replacement? Is it available online? I have tried to find a part # but haven't been able to find it.
