Wiring for Dummies

Let me begin by saying I know very little about electrics/electronics and so have relied upon the advice of those here abouts to good advantage in past. And so I must again.

I recently acquired a Garmin 3205 to replace the 162 at our helm station that suffered black screen death. The 3205 is, supposedly, AIS compatible and I am considering replacing our current Standard Horizon VHF with the version of the radio that includes AIS. Unfortunately, however, I cannot seem to find any specific information on how one wires up the interface between the two units although that may be due to my lack of knowledge of the correct terminology for my search efforts.

Any advise, instruction will be appreciated.

Re: Wiring for Dummies!?!

plug to/from NMEA 0183 ports. If you look at the manual for the GX2150 - the VHF w/AIS receiver I assume you're referring to - on the Standard Horizon site it explains how the connection is done.

Thanx--I found one document on the Standard Horizon site that shows a wiring set-up with the VHF connected to the GPSMap's Blue, Brow, Gary and Violet wires. However, on the Garmin site, they show the Blue and Brown wires from the 3205 connected to Pins 2 and 3, respectively, of ones DB-9 Serial Connector for connection to one's computer. Can the blue and brown wires from the Garmin be connected to both the VHF and the Computer?

Attached is a document I used to connect my GPS 740s to a SH 2100. I belive the wiring would be the same on yours.

Thanks a lot Barry. I'm going up to the boat shortly and will add this to the stack of references. I will compare the Pin-Outs on the 700 to the 3205 before connecting anything permanently.

Re: Wiring for Dummies!?!

What would be a good EASY book to read up on for my wiring?

I have had a look at a few before but my eyes start to glaze over, so one preferably that is an entertaining read, with pictures, not just a text book full of formulas, ohms, volts and squiggley lines.
