Windows 10 installed without my permission

I made the mistake of installing ten, loved seven. About everything takes an extra manual step or I have to hunt for something that was easy to find. I'd go back but might lose what little I have done. And if they haven't they will stop supporting 7 and 8. Giving it away must be pure economics for them.

Windoze crashed on me one too many times 2 years ago. My Mac is a piece of sh12 and I don't like being owned by any software, W10 or OSX.

Tried Linux, various flavours and did not feel happy until Linux Mint. Never been happier.

Here is a solution that will suit whoever has W7. This only applies if you have not already accepted W10.

The updates giving you trouble are 2952664 and 3035583

Search your updates and delete both. At the same time convert your update system to 100% manual. Both updates will return but at least you can ignore them.

I "UPDATED" to 7 because XP was no longer supported. Not only do they require updates, You cannot own the new office suit. My old OFFICE will not load by their $$ extraction plan. You must rent it now by the year. I suppose that when it expires while you are at sea, you will be incapacitated. I am so angry with their exploitation of the customer base. What a business plan. I may be going raspberry pie/Linux or re-loading 95, 98, XP and Office. Perhaps Mac. I think I am done with Mr. Gates knows best etc.
Re Office:

I deal a lot with MS Office of various flavours. IMO, Office 2013 is a classic example of enforcing the "cloud" upon end users whether they want it or not. Furthermore, it is also the most troublesome of all recent Office releases, seemingly suffering a range of gremlins not generally found in earlier versions.

Also don't forget the licensing model has changed. Subscription is indeed pushed, but if purchased outright the license is strictly for a single PC and cannot be transferred forever more to another PC as per the EULA (although this can be gotten around with some hassle). Earlier versions of Office are far less restrictive on use.

My advice if you're stuck with MS Office is to buy Office 2010 or 2007 from Ebay. There's still plenty of unopened genuine versions available at very good prices.

Better still, 99% of users of MS Office do not need to use MS Office. Try one of the many free variants instead like Open Office or Libre Office. Cost is zip and unless you're into macros or documents connected to data sources or MS Access databases or complex MS Office specific documents you'll barely skip a beat in the change over. There's no Outlook, but again plenty of free Email clients abound e.g. Thunderbird.

While your at it, chuck out Acrobat Reader DC. It phones home too, and plenty of lightweight alternatives are available like Sumatra PDF Reader that again will do 99% of what you require without the bloat and phone home "features".

go in and change something and you don't
get any more W10 notifications. Worked

Remedy???... Cast off the dock lines and give family/friends a plastic cup with a string tied to it. You have another cup on your end. Tell them as long as the string holds out, they can contact you.

(make it a very short string and be happy!)

You would have given it permission to upgrade as it doesn't do it with out asking, unfortunately the box that asks for permission is really poor and has a OK, Update now button. But what is really bad is that the close button will also do the update!

For people on 7 or 8 who don't want to do the update you can set a group policy so it doesn't do it. GRC has created a small program to set this policy. The program can be deleted afterwards as its only setting the policy.

Nothing new here - Windows IS malware.

I recommend downloading a control panel named GWX (named after M$'s GWX.exe which is the app which Gets Windows eXperience). The control panel blocks all of the Win 10 upgrade nonsense.

Ideally you should not allow M$ to update automatically, just notify you. Then look through the updates and don't install the bad ones. This takes a bit of time to research so not really practical for most users. BTW Win 10 Home users no longer have a choice as all updates are automatically applied without permission.

Personally I think the best thing for Win 7 users to do is clone their system, to an SSD if not already installed. Then take one copy and accept the Win 10 upgrade. Put that in a safe place and go back to using Win 7 until 2020 (Win 7 support ends in late 2019). By getting the Win 10 copy now you avoid having to pay for it after this July. M$ has been very cagey about discussing their billing plans but you should be prepared for an announcement this summer that all updates, including security patches, will be available on subscription beginning at some point in the not-so-distant future. M$ is not in the business of charity...

The real answer is to migrate to Linux. Arguably the best free consumer desktop is Linux Mint, and also one of the most popular. You can try it in a VirtualBox virtual machine, or install as a dual boot option.

And this will not improve over time. Microsoft's moving toward cloud-based computing, but then, so are most platforms. Even Nix-based platforms are going more toward thin-client-based operating environments. Sadly, gents, this isn't a new development. Windows 10 isn't quite there, per se, but I feel your pain, OP.

Give Windows 10 a chance. The installation conditions were less-than-auspicious, but you might find the operating environment better than what you were using.

A contrarian opinion: the cloud is mostly a way of getting more of your money, while you lose control of your reliability, security and privacy. Instead buy your own Network Attached Server (NAS) and create your own "cloud". This is not for everyone, but for reasonably experienced users it is a great option.

Which is another good reason to get Mint. Mint is based on Ubuntu and uses its software repositories, but removes the intrusive features and provides a clean, consistent user interface.
