I have several times updated my Simrad RS35 VHF/AIS-(receive) downloading the files from the Simrad website then installing them from my Simrad NSS evo2 MFD. However, my HS35 remote mic had to be updated by Simrad. It was about a week turnaround.

Thank you for that information.

The ability of some brands to be able to update their VHF DSC radios using their same-brand multi-function displays does seem to be an advantage, and one that I had not considered before when choosing a radio brand.

Simrad USA as well, but not available for purchase on-line.
https://www.simrad-yachting.com/simr...hf-radios-ais/
It might explain Defender putting the previous Simrad VHF on sale - list $499.00, now $171.99.
https://www.defender.com/product3.js...355&id=5383844
But, Defender only carry the RS-40 (receive only), not the RS-40B (transmit and receive).

I see the Simrad RS-40B is now in stock. The VHF radio has a built in AIS class B transceiver.

Thanks for the heads-up!

You also reminded me I was going to pass this along:
https://www2.vespermarine.com/cortex

It was just announced by Vesper, apparently it's a VHF/AIS black box that's designed from the ground up to work with smart phones, tablets and dedicated handheld remotes. It kinda makes sense. It'll be one to watch.

The vesper cortex looks the business, just won a bunch of awards, and most impressive to me is they use my boat name in their collision avoidance example; looks like I’ll be getting one when they are available
