Re: Which radar and display for Cruising Sailboat?

The website doesn’t make it clear. Do you have to log in to the wifi-network of the radar, or can you connect it to your existing network. If you have to log in to the radar, then the device you’re using becomes useless for anything else and so you can’t use it for navigation. The same problem happens with the awful implementation of mirroring on the Raymarine chartplotters — you have to log in to the mfd and then the mirroring is the only app working (if you can call the sluggish response “working”)

I’m hoping that one day one of the instrument manufacturers gets up to date with network technology rather than scared of it.

I have a Garmin 741XS chartpllotter(now obsolete) I rarely use the chrtplotter. The unit is a good display for the XHD 18' radar and the Panoptix sonar.

There’s a huge benefit to having radar overlay on your chart display, as it aids in validating that the chart is correct in unfamiliar coastal areas. You already have the Garmin MFD. Just add a Garmin radome and be done with it.

Re: Which radar and display for Cruising Sailboat?

We have a year old Garmin. It's as good as the radar I used on the Airbus.

There is one very good reason to use components that are all from the same company: Support. If there's a problem, either wired or wireless configuration or adapters in between devices..."Oh, that's their problem, you have to call the other guy." No, when it is all from one source the one guy on the phone just has to deal with it, one way or the other.

Of course in theory it is all plug-n-pray and there's never going to be any need to call support. (Heard that one before, have you?)
