Which country issues ZM callsigns?

Does anyone know which country issues ZM marine callsigns? There's a guy (English?) who keeps trying to check into ham nets but only has a marine callsign starting with ZM.

Re: Which country issues ZM callsigns?

It's the ITU prefix for New Zealand.

Thanks, just found the wiki page. Now I'm looking for a way to search for the owner.

For ham call signs, ZM is allocated to New Zealand, and is used only for "special events". I believe that the marine licenses use the same blocks of letters as the ham ones, so that is the likely origin for this chap's call sign (if real)

Thanks. I think it's real, but I'm not sure he understands the difference between amateur and marine frequencies -- he seems to have tried checking in multiple times after being told we can't talk to him unless it's an emergency.

Re: Which country issues ZM callsigns?

You can find the name of the ship correspnding to the callsign on this page of the ITU website: Particulars of Ship stations

But finding the name of the guy is another matter.

It's too bad the marine operators can't police themselves like the ham community does.
