Weather Radios

I'm looking for a good weather radio to use in the Bahamas. A friend who has three, likes his inexpensive Radio Shack radio better than his more expensive ones: RadioShack.com - Phones & Radio Communications: Weather radios: 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation

But it isn't shortwave.

Any suggestions?

You're wasting your money on this. You won't get anything on it in the Bahamas, well maybe in Bimini you'll be ok. Get a SW radio with SSB, that's all you need and you'll get all the weather you want. Last couple of years I've used a Sony ICF-SW7600GR. I get weather with this and the reception is as good as what my friends get with their SSB rigs. Before that I had an earlier model Sony, around 1990 but it gave up the ghost a couple of years ago. I forget what I paid for the latest Sony but a search on the web will get you the best price. I think I got mine from Amazon. If you have a good vhf you can sometimes get NOAA just south of Norman Cay but the SW receiver is your best bet. Just checked Amazon, $147, free shipping.

Rick

Yea, I figured that the R/S radio wouldn't work. I've seen that some SW Weather radios advertise that they have SSB and others don't mention SSB. How much difference will that make?

Don't get one without SSB as most of the weather and especially Chris Parker (Bel Ami) which most cruisers listen to are on SSB.Carib WX - Caribbean Weather Information
The little Sony gets excellent reception with just the pull out antenna.

Thanks Rick....that tells me what I need.

If anyone else has suggestions on specific radios, I would love to hear them.

Whether the weather be good
or whether the weather be bad
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather
Whether we like it or not.
